I shopped in New Look last week and was asked for my e-mail address for a receipt. I declined and asked for a paper receipt and was given one, no problem.1

Can't see the fuss with people that have email and access to the internet. Much easier having a digital receipt then a paper one.Just set up a free email account for receipts, or use receipts+powerfulroge@gmail.com

Rather than lose a bit of paper.
It's odd that someone posts as old school, but at a guess is possibly using name & year of birth as their username.Life in the slow lane1 -
I returned a faulty item to Lidl once - I didn't have the receipt, but knew which day I had bought it and which card I used, so the manager went through their records and printed out a receipt for me. I didn't get the logic, but it was excellent customer service.

Set up an insurer that will only write ESG positive clients, normally getting the investors to back broad spectrum insurers is really hard because some will like Casualty but hate Property or some don't want any more North America exposures etc. Our ESG insurer however was massively over subscribed by those wanting to support it and got highly favourable terms. Surprisingly even certain clients explicitly wanted to be insured by the ESG part of the business rather than the regular.2 -

What if you don't have an email address?
Or you don't have a printer to print off a receipt?

No legal requirement to give a receipt for a retail sale, not even the second receipt you get when you pay by card.
For the store's own policies such as 30 day returns when bought in shop, they can set their own rules.
Statutory claims under CRA require proof of purchase which is not necessarily a till receipt.
If the OP had paid by cash so had no other proof of purchase she could have stood her ground or threatened to cancel the sale. I suspect the manager would eventually have come up with a hand-written receipt accompanied by huffing, puffing and rolling of eyes.
Either side can of course write out the receipt. The OP can go shopping armed with her own receipts 'Purchased on the above date by TracyS66 the following items...' for the sales associate or whatever they are called to sign.1
