  • What do you all do when you've had a bit of a cheat? We went for a meal yesterday and it pushed my syns up over 15 (to 20 - kicking myself for having cornflakes for breakfast.)

Would you just have fewer syns for a few days or write it off?

I'd say the thing to do is just write it off. If you start restricting you'll probably feel deprived and it may all happen again!
I'm always being told that it's not one day of going over that puts weight on, it's giving up when you do that and then going over again and again.
Start today as a new day. Good luck!
  • Oh thank goodness. Thanks for the tips. I would have given up previously but feel really positive about this diet. And next time I am going out to eat, I'll make sure I have a syn free breakfast!
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • Does anyone have the recipe for the syn free veg lasange please?

Oooh I'd like this too please! :j
  • Think the cheese is where the syns will be on green so maybe you could just make sure that you put enough on to count as a HEA.
    Serves: 4
    Syns per serving:
1 Syn on Green, 8½ Syns on Original

    113g/4oz button mushrooms, quartered
    2 large onions, chopped
    142ml/¼pt passata
    salt & ground black pepper
    113g/4oz courgettes, sliced
    113g/4oz aubergines, sliced
½ red pepper, deseeded & sliced
½ yellow pepper, deseeded & sliced
    113g/4oz whole baby sweetcorn
    2 x 400g/14oz cans chopped tomatoes
    ½ tsp artificial sweetener
    12 dried lasagne sheets
511g/1lb 2oz very low fat natural fromage frais
28g/1oz reduced fat cheddar cheese, grated

    1. Preheat the oven to 190ºC/Gas Mark 5. Dry fry the mushrooms and one of the onions in a large heavy-based saucepan. Add the passata and season to taste. Stir in the courgettes, aunergines, peppers and sweetcorn and simmer for 20 minutes.
    2. In a second saucepan place the remaining onion, tomatoes and sweetener and season to taste. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
    3. Spoon 4-5 tablespoons of the tomato mixture into a lasagne dish. Add 3 sheets of lasagne and then a layer of the vegetables. Continue layering this way finally pouring the fromage frais on top, Sprinkle with the cheese and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. Serve with a huge mixed salad.
  • Or there is always this one:

    Lentil Lasagne
    Ingredients
    2 large onions, chopped
    2 cloves garlic
    2 sticks celery, chopped
    3 medium carrots, chopped
    2 peppers, chopped
1 big tin of chopped tomatoes
    250/9oz brown lentils
1 tbsp tomato puree or passata
    1 bay leaf
    sprig thyme
    cloves
    lasagne sheets
    1 big tub of quark
Grated low fat cheese (use Healthy Extra B choices or check Sins)
    Salt, pepper, nutmeg
    Method
    1. Cook the veg & herbs in the chopped tomatoes. If you have time, let it simmer for 2-3 hours. Add lentils and enough water to cover and simmer until lentils are cooked (or use tinned lentils).
    2. Make white sauce from 1 tub of quark, grated cheese, salt and pepper.
    3. Use a large oven proof shallow dish. Put into the bottom some lentil mixture then pasta sheets, then sauce. Repeat finishing with the white sauce (you can add an egg to the quark here). Cover with cheese and bake in the oven for 20 minutes on 190°C/375°F/Gas Mark 5 until bubbling and brown.
Sins per serving: 1 on Green, 5 on Original
  • Gingham to be honest I think you did well keeping it to 20 syns if you were out as the syns can rack up so quickly. Well done. On days when I know I am going to use loads of syns at dinner I have fruit and lasting satisfaction yoghurt (it really does fill me up more than mullerlight) and eggs(always filling) that way not only is it free but it is totally neutral so you can have a bit more flexibility at dinner, and you can still Mix2Max if you fancy it too.

can we talk a bit about doing budget-friendly SW please?

I've been doing SW for 10 days and I'm spending more on groceries than i should.
My downfalls are fromage frais, mullerlights and especially Alpen Light bars.

Of course i could just not buy them but they really satisfy my craving for sweet stuff.

Hello, I have a sweet tooth and spent a fortune the first week on these things too. I have been doing SW for a couple of weeks and strangely don´t seem to be craving as many sweet things.

I try to make all my meals syn free as that leaves all my syns for sweet things. Green days are much cheaper than red days. Lunches in particular are cheap - slice of weight watchers toast with beans, baked potatoe with cottage cheese, french toast, quorn sausage with fried potatoes, beans and a fried egg.

I buy the Alpen Light bars (around 2 pounds for 6 in the co-op) and eat two a day so it is nearly five pounds on them alone. I will try to work out a recipe for a free and home made bar this weekend as I could do with this too.

I buy a pineapple and it lasts me over a week. Sometimes they are 99p other times 1.99. I would never pay over 2 pounds for it. Then I take the top off and work my way down the pineapple as the week goes on. I find that one slice cubed or cut into sticks can keep a sugar craving at bay for a wee while.

I also buy low fat creme fraiche (which is 1.5 syns for a tablespoon). For a nice desert I mix two spoons in a glass with a spoonful of drinking chocolate or three spoonsful of options drinking chocolate. This makes a tasty chocolate desert for 4-5 syns depending which drinking chocolate you use.

One last thing. I save my cheese and one of my 3 slices of weight watchers bread until just before bed time when I will have a cup of tea with cheese on toast. This is a nice wee treat to look forward to at night when I am in most danger of needing sweet things. I use low fat cheddar as it lasts much longer than the babybells and you can have quite a bit of it (enough to make 2 slices of toast if you have 2 slices of bread left from your HEB).

I hope this helps npsmama. If you let us know how much you would like to spend on your weekly shopping and what types of things you eat maybe we can work out some other ideas. One other idea if you use the alpen lights for a sweet thing would be to get those party rings that someone suggested which are 1.5 syns each.

Thanks. I'm veggie so can't mix and mullerlight has gelatine in so I can't have that either. What is lasting satisfaction yoghurt? I have fat free plain yoghurt but have to add syns to flavour it.

And thanks for the boost. I did do quite well to be honest. I SO wanted to have the delicious chocolate pudding...with a belgian chocolate sauce so shiny that you can actually see your reflection in it...(sighs) but I had 3 squares of choccie when I got home instead!

  • Oooh never thought about mullers not being veggie friendly, but then never thought of putting gelatine in a yoghurt, yuck. Glad I don't have them much. Lastin satisfaction are the new yoghurts from shape the ones advertised by Tess Daly, in fact that was the reason I didn't buy them for ages cos I hate that advert, no idea if they have yuckies in them too but they have added fibre type stuff which is meant to make them more satisfying for longer and I certainly find it does, they are also a lot thicker than mullers so I guess the chances are they are out too. Probably a heck of a lot cheaper to stick to the natural stuff anyway and a darn site healthier. I don't eat that many of them but they are a handy supplement to my week for those need to not be hungry but stay neutral moments. I am struggling today though as I am like Old Mother Hubbard again and it is WI tonight. NOT the day to have nothing in. I have gone green so I can have the macaroni cheese only to realise I don't have much cheese left (thank you DS). So just had an Alpen light and 3 eggs scrambled, will have my remaining Alpen before I leave for class and then might not stay for IT and go do an Asda blitz instead. Then home for macaroni. I thought I had a recipe for the SW luxury macaroni but I don't seem to be able to find it, does anyone else have it?
