In my opinion you need to go to the classes to get the full benefit. When you start to flag you get encouragement, recipes and inspiration from being in class.

i joined slimming world but it took me a while to muster up the courage to join a class especially as i had just moved house and area..

I find this diet really simple and easy to follow and enjoy when you get the hang of it.. i looked at the online versions and i couldnt get my head round it and in all honesty if i didnt look forward to my weigh in each week i would probably fall at the first second and third etc hurdle..

The banter at the sessions is great and ive made some real nice friends out of it who support me

I have over 10 stone to lose and im almost at my 3rd stone as you can see from my sig.

Slimming world now do a countdown system were you pay for 5 sessions get one free and pay for 10 get 2 free i do it this way as its easier for me and that way i dont feel the need to skip a session even if ive cheated lol

Good luck in what ever you choose to do

I followed the SW diet around 6 years ago.
I want to start it again but I don't have any of the books here.

I am now living in the US and they are not available over here, I cant really afford the prices they charge on e-bay and cannot afford the online group ( I prefer to have the books anyway)
I recently bought the Weight watchers starter kit (paid a small fortune for it) and I hate it!

Would anybody be willing to get hold of the basic books for me and post them to me (Of course I would cover the costs Via paypal)
Or does anyone know of any websites where I could find the books in e- Version ( that would do at a pinch)

As I said I know the basics, I just cant remember it all.

    Thanks

I liked the diet but I didn't like the class leader, and she does every class for miles around. I left and tried to go it alone by buying a pile of books, and just a few weeks later they completely changed the Syn system and made the website password protected! I was really annoyed that they took money off me for books that were about to be obsolete. I know that it should be possible to soldier on with the plan and stick to mostly "Free" foods but sometimes it is really useful to know the Syn value of a pre-packed food and for that you need up-to-date access to Syn values, and you can't do that with books that are getting more and more out of date.

I have considered the online membership, but I think it's a bit much to demand 3 months money up front! I've got no idea what the online membership offers because the website is big on spin and suspiciously lacking in actual detail. I signed up for their 7 day trial and it was useless - it was all meal plans including food I don't like, or that doesn't suit family meals.

Broadly speaking I do like the diet but I don't like the way they do business. I'm still undecided about joining again.

You can do it without paying for the online subscription with the help of all the lovely people on this forum http://messageboards.ivillage.co.uk/iv-ukdfslimming If there are syns you are unsure of, someone on here usually knows or can find out.
They have a great recipe section and people post up their meal plans to give you ideas. Check it out and I hope it helps :)

Hello, and thank you for al of your replies.

I joined a class last wek (forst weigh in tonight).

Well, I have to admit to being totally underwhelmed with the class! Maybe my expectations were off bean, but I was totaly bored. Spent 1/2 hour doing nothing while everone gets weighed, then spent an hour listening to everyone's loss. The leader sounded as if she was reading from a script.

Anyway, the actual diet (or plan) seems really good, if a bit confusing. The leader said the best way to reach her was by email. So, on day 2 I emaild a few questions. After 24 hours, I got a response (hardly "always on hand", as the publicity states). She didn't really answer many of my questions, just suggested I but SW amgazines/books etc.

So now I am really wondering what I get for my £4.50!!! I suppose the leaders will vary from group to group, but I was less impressed!

Maybe tonight will be better - I'll give it a chance. She did mention having a taster session this week, so we'll see.

Another confusion is the Red and Green thing. The leader said that best results come frm alternating (I'm doing 2 green followed by 2 red), but on other threads on this forum, it has been said a few times that Green works better for weight loss.

    What do you think?

    Thanks

If you're considering another system it's worth trying weight loss resources an online system. It's around £9 a month and offers a whole host of help. I lost loads of weight using it and it did help me to think properly about my food and hold myself accountable. Though all my clothes are too tight again now - turns out you have to use it for it to work, not just pay for it :(

You can do a free 3 day trial I think.

The red and green thing is purely what works best for you. Some people find that the weight rockets off with green but plateaus quickly whereas with red days its slower but more regular weight loss. There are plenty of veggies who only do green and still lose plenty of weight so do whatever suits you.
The first time I did SW in my mid teens I lost about 4 stone doing only green. I did it again 10 years later and lost 1 1/2 stone doing more of a mix of days so both work

I did Green because I'm not a big meat eater - I used to have small portions of meat as Health Options. If you are trying to diet on a low budget, you might not be able to afford lots of meat for Red days. Red days come in useful for summer barbecues

Thanks for your replies. I think I will do mostly green then! Filigree you are so right. We are having a BBQ this weekend for DH's birthday, and have planned loads of free food on Red - Chicken, Tuna Steaks, Pork Loin and salad etc. That should make it easy to stick to it.

Anyway, last nights weigh in - lost 2 lbs - yay! Lady who joined with me lost 4 lbs, and admitted to drinking loads of Barcardi & Coke! And she doesn't look to have a lot to lose anyway!

Once again, the meeting was a BIG disappointment. Firstly, leader missed me out on the reading out of weight, and asking how things are going bit (maybe I lost so much I am invisible). So at the end I went up to her to check that she hadn't lost my record.

She said, no, and was surpised she missed me out. Then she asked me how it was going, and after the first sentence of my reply, she said: Excuse me, I just want to grab some of that chicken (from the tasters people had brought in), and shot off. I waited to see if she returned, but she just started to talk to another group (she initiated the conversation with them).

I am really starting to resent this woman getting my subscription. So much for the caring support!!

Don't go back if you don't like it- now you have all the information go for a walk on the night you should be weighed- better than sitting seething at a very poor leader- I have been to many diet classes, and she sounds simply awful-most aren't like that, so tell her why and don't go back!
