Thanks @greenbee. I've read it and this is not the plant I'm looking for so I have the wrong name. Also not 'mind your own business'

This is a very nice cake. https://www.maryberry.co.uk/recipes/baking/coconut-meringue-slices

It worked better with st0rk rather than butter.

Another quick job to add to the ‘keeping on top of the garden list’ - pulling the flowering stalks of Spanish bluebells before they set seed. Easy and quick job to do and it stops them spreading quite as fast as they might …

Prompted by all the gardening virtue here, I gathered a big bucketful of sticky weed at the end of the day today 😊

All of the blasted sticky weed exploding into growth here, mr fluffy trousers spreads it around like it's glued to him. Oh, wait...

mr redo kindly turned the veg plot over with a fork, and we did some rotavating then put up the bean frames.  Too hot to put the tiny veg out but we did plant the two climbing roses, and I cut a small bunch off my David Austin climbers.

The no dig bits are frankly giant litter trays.

I started netting today, mostly because of the giant litter tray problem. I've also used the wool insulation from when I had frozen cat food delivered to put round the seedlings as I plant them out in the hope that it helps reduce slug damage.

I've topped up compost on a couple of fruit beds that were a bit shallow (thanks to Palletline being hopeless at delivering on schedule - I've now found a local source of compost and had 4000l delivered), watered all the outside veg, and pressure washed the really grim bit of the patio. I need to give it a sweep and put stuff back as it's currently all on the grass.

Other than that, once the greenhouse and patio pots have been watered i'm giving up for today. I'd hoped to do a bit more mowing and weedkilling and weeding and potting on/pricking out etc, but there are only so many hours in the day. Let's hope I can find a bit more time on work days in future.

All this gardening talk inspired me to tackle the seemingly never ending weeds yesterday and I have half filled two garden waste bins.  Did a bit more at lunchtime and will try and do a couple of 15 minute sessions each day - it has already made a noticeable difference!

Two very full green waste bins out for collection in the morning, mostly sticky weed. Really starting to see a difference although there is a long way to go - thank you to everyone for the encouragement.

Runner beans and a few peas transplanted and some evening watering done. The RHS website says not too late to sow cucumbers and French beans to replace those eaten by slugs but I'm too tired tonight.

I'm short on climbing beans for some reason. Need to dig out the seeds and see what else I have lurking. Hoping the wool will keep the slugs away from the stuff planted out today until it is big enough to cope.

Did more mowing, but am too tired to do more spraying which really does need doing.

I need to get tomatoes potted up tomorrow morning and dispose of the spares (I'm sure the village FB group will find homes for them).

Ended up doing a little pulling of the bind weed just before going up for my shower this evening. Some was just the tops and the other bits were at least 4 inches of root - no rhyme or reason to it. Much more needs doing but the onions are not YET swamped - I’ll take that as win 😉

  • Bit late but I would so love a fly lady type gardening thread, we have been here two years and abandoned the garden in favour of DIY in the house. this year I intended on getting it all straight as the last owner took such pride in the garden and it is beautiful if maintained well and then we decided to move so I haven't done anything now aside from clean it up and cut the grass....only to find the grass is full of some sort of weed that looks like dandelion but it isn't ???

Also sticky weed...cleavers...makes a fantastic tea. Get some where there has been no dog wee or bird poop, pick it off, give a quick rinse, and pop in a tea pot with some hot water and lemon. It is analgesic as far as I recall...and it made me all woozy the last time I had some like I had had a drink lol. Same for mugwort when I made tea from that  I always let weeds grow to a certain degree in my garden, I think for the most part many are given a bad name but the healing properties of them all outweigh their reputation. I like nettle tea too  my neighbours must hate me (bind weed is pulled up though that is one I don't like).
