Down here there is quite often a log cabin / shed / pod thing next to garden centres. Worth looking

  • @redofromstart I will have a look on tuin thank you. Did you build it yourself? I think if I have it in the budget we will pay them to do it. Work spaces for DP, I don’t think he could rent a space easily without jumping through lots of security loops at work because of the level of clearance he has on things to do with his specific job. It was a PITA sorting it at our house. Also I think he quite likes being up in the small bedroom which isn’t really much use for anything else (def too small for ds1) although it would make a lovely sized bathroom…I have debated swapping office and bathroom over  He wanted to be outside because I think he likes the separation between home and work but I think he’s also probably too lazy to want it out of the house.

@beanielou I will have a look into pods thanks. @greenbee also shepherd’s huts…they sound cute which is what I would like if I can afford it. @~flowerpot~ thank you!

So last night I actually had a decent night sleep - YAY. It makes the world of difference to me. I woke up with my alarm even though it's my day off. I always like to make sure the kids are up. I then painted the built in bookcases DP has started. Used an entire tin of primer!!  But both are painted! So hope I don't need any more as there was none left. I showered, got dressed in clothes without paint all over them, went with DP to the building society to sort out our ID to open new account for EF. Then I went to the dentist, waited 45 minutes in the waiting room  whilst other people were coming and going. Was in there 10 minutes, she x rayed me without even asking, asked me four times if I smoked and drank by this point I thought, oh god my teeth must be falling out or something. Then interrogated me on my dental regime twice. I always lie. It's easier. I haven't used fluoridated toothpaste in over 10 years. And I don't floss. And my mouthwash is home made  I am a dentists nightmare. So anyway, I fib. They say oh good, when I say colgate <or insert some other big brand toothpaste> then she checks my xrays that I didn't give permission for and tells me my teeth are looking great and I don't even need the hygienist - my budget sighed at this point because I am not sure where I would have stolen another £100 for for that. So >£30 today woop.

All my MOPs added up this month brings me to just shy of £100 so I will at some point find an extra couple of quid to make it up to the £100.

Back to the DS home and job issue. So he went in yesterday after having spoken to me, relieved really that he had somewhere to go and by this point seriously angry at their promises that always turn up empty. He verbally started the resignation process. They then offered the world to him (his words) and have said they will get him his move- I don't think they realised he had somewhere to go and probably thought they had him over a barrel. I told him to hang fire then, which he was already going to do, he's given them 2 weeks to sort it or he will start the written / proper process to signing off. They've dangled £6,000 in front of him and said you cannot take that money unless you give us another 2 years.............I have told him time and again that money is not the be all and end all. Happiness and peace must trump this (hope I am not preaching to the wrong crowd here, don't boo me off please  ) So he's giving them 2 weeks and that will be the decider, he has said he doesn't want to stay just because of the money but obviously it would come in handy to pay off his CC and car loan (ugh I preached so hard about not living beyond means......!!) However....this all being said, he has said to me, can we still come to yours even if we do stay in for the two years, we would like to save up to buy rather than renting. So I obviously said yes. If he stays he will hand his notice in next Feb which will mean he has one year's notice and can start the process back to being a civvie and finding a job and should get the £6k.

And DP and I have been chatting and we've agreed it could be a really good idea to get a self contained type of building in the garden anyway because we can let it out air b'n'b or have a lodger etc to help pay down the mortgage. So effectively it will pay for itself. We have side access to the garden so it can be completely separate to the house. So we are continuing our hunt for a suitable space that will fit a bedroom, small shower room, kitchenette/living space. I have seen some online that are around 4mx10m which would be ideal. We can just about fit that in - I think. That is my next job for today to go and measure up before it is too late/dark. I will report back if it doesn't fit and the sizing will have to be re-thunk

Sorted out next month's budget, we overspent on a tv unit and bookcases this month so next month there is zilch in the budget for DIY. I have to get DP to stick to this or we will end up in CC debt. I have a few hundred on my CC now which will be paid off on payday but that money is now not in my budget for next month. One way or another that bleeding carpet loan WILL be paid off before my next birthday though!! (end of feb so on countdown!)

    Right off to measure up.

Yes we built them both ourselves, and really regretted going for the higher roof on the summer house when we were adding the last few bits.  The summerhouse is the 28mm construction which has twisted a little over time, and the workshop is this installed 2017, is slightly thicker and hasn't twisted but does need a coat of paint in spring.  If I was installing one again in a future house I would go with the thicker wood and would pay for install.

Oh wow that is so cheap compared to what I'd found on my own!!! After chatting things through with an MSE pal on a video call (thanks @~FlowerPot~ ) I think perhaps converting the garage is more efficient - time and energy and money wise. It is big enough in there already and with some cladding on the awful concrete outside it could look pretty. Needs new roof, windows and door but it's on solid foundations and the walls are solid and the space could easily fit a bedroom, living spaces with a shower room. It will be way bigger than a wooden structure in our price bracket too.

I will however want to replace our summer house at the end of the garden and am now looking at these links and ideas everyone has sent me for that instead 😁♥️

Hi @libster08 DP and I have the loft room in our house it was already converted when we bought it.
We had a quote for the last house for a loft conversion and it was starting from £40k😳 and the room would have only been around 10ftx14ft not even huge! Madness.
