We moved from a large village/small town on the edge of Milton Keynes that was being swamped by newbuilds to a market town in Suffolk. There's houses going up a couple of miles away, but I look at what is happening to our old area, where I was born, and don't regret moving here at all. People here moan about how the area has changed, but we accept it as it is, because we never knew what it used to be like. People who moved into our old area would say how lovely it was, not knowing how much lovelier it used to be! Where our house is now there isn't much scope for more building unless they try building on a park which is below river level.
I think that's the trick really. Find somewhere you like and which is tricky to blight, and leave the unsatisfactory situation of your previous home behind.

Really don't be put off by my build palavers, having somewhere that is already yours to live in halves the stress straight away as you won't feel so vulnerable and panicked. There will be knobbers as is the case with every build, but I feel like I must surely have taken one for the team by getting all the awfulness for my build 😂

Dublin is known for corrupt planning to be fair, the worst part is the apartments are all built to let at extortionate rent

When we got planning permission, we went modest, rather than trying to maximise what could be built on the land - and sold the land with planning consent for two houses (rather than 4 small bungalows, which the previous owners had applied for and been refused). I think we forget how much attitudes and times change, and the introduction of new people can bring communities back to life a bit. It does need to be right development, right place but things do change

When I lived in the South East I watched houses going up daily and wondered how some had got planning permission granted....they were building on flood plains, green spaces, knocked down one of our old houses that we lived in growing up, and also the neighbours (two quite nice sized four bed semis) and built a block of 20 flats 😐...when I was looking to buy rather than rent I decided I didn't want to stay down there any longer and looked to move out to the shires ... The areas surrounding London were always going to be the first to be over developed I guess and I don't recognise the places I grew up any more. The pretty houses and green spaces are all gone. Replaced with new builds. I don't regret moving away.
Get your PP and move on to a new chapter 😉😁.

Agree PP is a total mystery really. I 've gone for something very modest (one bedroom home) and the local council have said they do support my plans but what happens on the day is really the luck of the draw.
The permission will enhance the value of the land, so I am trying. This is about maximising things after PPH and building a life I want to live which sadly is not in an area that is becoming more and more built up.
Talking of which yesterday I bought a ticket for an event that I like going to - it is a horse show - but I splashed out and bought a ringside ticket because WattyDog struggles to walk distances and I don't want to go without him so I bought this ticket so he can come and minimise the walking. I am so excited. It is a special picnic spot and people turn up with chairs and tables and bottle of champagne and so on. Now we won't be doing any of this - but I will pack us a simple picnic I think. Many years ago I had a broken leg and so thought I would go to this event and buy one of these special tickets. PPH put it off - and - inevitably it just did not happen and I remember not going and sitting in the garden instead on my own that day.
I love that I earn enough money to be able to splash out on a ticket (which was not as expensive as I thought actually) that I have no one in my life making me feel guilty about spending that amount (except myself) and I can absolutely choose to create the life I want to live.

It strikes me that some people/businesses will always get planning permission & some won't. I do think that now when we are buying we need to be a lot more careful that we don't land up buying on things like flood plains because the builders are not going to tell us that is what they are selling. It should be covered by trades descriptions but does not seem to be. So buyer beware.

Having a bit of a negative morning. It is Saturday, it should be a joy filled day but to be honest I cannot think of much I really want to do. I would take one of the horses out but I am so over the traffic and the last time I went to the tiny bit of woodland I found to ride in I was almost in tears with the traffic and the road battles to get there.
My car is still off the road to be fixed.
I will go and make a cup of tea and put some washing on the line and have a think about next steps.
