We have the two couples who looked after our dog so I could visit Mr Sl in hospital without always having DS &P having to come over, coming for drinks and nibbles on Monday - I'm doing cocktails and canapés! - Just 3 cocktails and five or six canapes. Something different to say thank you

Finally managed to get washing dry, last lot just finishing in tumble dryer as I type.    Thanks for the tips!  The boiler and hot water tank completely fill a cupboard in the kitchen so no possibility of using that and mostly the house is too cold to dry much quickly over winter.  Usually not an issue but I had to wash two lots of bedding and all the towels that had been residing in a washing basket and  "odds" that looked filthy.

I know this is a rural home with animals but I don't like people seeing the general grubbiness that I am used to
I might invest in a dehumidifier, the last one gave up and was never particularly efficient at drying washing although it might have been on "its last legs" by the time I tried.   The tumble dryer is very expensive to run I noted.

The real issue is I am committed to looking for a home somewhere the hacking is fabulous and my new home might not need a new energy efficient tumble dryer - or - even - a dehumidifier - so I am reluctant to spend out.  Then again my new home might actually not have a roof (yes I do still love that place in Yorkshire) so both might be essential

One of the things I try to remember is that the washing just needs to be done before the next visitors, not immediately after the current ones leave! While I do use the TD (I got a heat pump one not long after moving here to avoid making another hole in the wall, and sold the old one), I tend to save laundry for when there's good solar/cheap agile pricing - so if you're not sure whether you wan to invest in a dehumidfier/TD before you have your plan properly in place, maybe consider a bigger laundry bin

If the house is cold it could be that it has an element of dampness, that makes anywhere feel colder than it is.  Drying it out will definitely make it feel warmer

Another thought... but depending on your timescales, would solar/batteries be worthwhile given you appear to have a lot of roof available? Prices are pretty good at the moment and I now make more income from solar than I spend on import by some considerable margin.

Drying out the  cottage is probably a good point @daisy_1571    The old part that was once a barn is very poorly insulated (ahem possibly not really!)

I'd love solar and did look into some years back with PPH      The best place for solar would actually be the banks around the riding arena apparently rather than on the roof but at the time I was with PPH and he was against spending the money (naturally, as there would have been less for him to snaffle!)   If I was confident about staying i would do a cost benefit check on solar but I'm not so ????

In other news friends arrived, a lovely time was had (I hope) by all.  The fridge is still full of food and alcohol so I clearly over catered.  The one night in the hotel and two days spent at the London Horse Show made it seem like a "proper holiday".  Much was spent just having fun and although it was all accounted for in my head  I notice I still  "feel"  I should be more frugal so next year I will work on proper budgeting for events - but - I 'only' purchased one thing whilst shopping.  I now have metal hangers to put on my arena fencing to hold jump poles.  Storing and using jump poles over the winter was something VNM and I thought about and then put them in a barn but this means I can just keep a few out for use.  Happy Watty with this purchase

Friends now have gone.

i have a cold - one of those miserable colds where you cannot decide if you are hot or cold and just keep sneezing and coughing.  VNM is out mucking out the horses for me and I'm back off to bed.   Will cancel the pre Christmas tea shop visit with girlfriends as it would not be fair to give them this so close to Christmas.

I have the same cold Watty, hot and cold and chesty and now painful sinuses. I hope we both get rid of it soon.

Hope so too.  Am working today to do catch up whilst snuffling into tissues!
