  • Thanks for your advice - I had booked and paid for two tickets with Maxjet for August this year with my debit card at a cost of £1500. I wrote to the Visa Centre who deal with Lloyds debit cards in Southend, quoting all the information I had managed to glean from the internet and also including a quote from one of their Customer Service Managers who said that "if any of our debit or credit card customers pay for goods which they do not receive, we will reimburse them" and today received a full refund for £1500 paid direct into my account!

If anyone else has paid for tickets with Maxjet using their Visa debit card, I urge them to write to the Visa Centre in Southend to claim a refund:

    Southchurch Avenue
Southend on Sea, Essex SS1 2LB

Thanks for this info. Have been trying to work out how to get my cash back for flights to Vegas in March booked on Visa Debit card. Spoke to Halifax but they said no, so will try writing to Debit Card Services. Fingers crossed.

Good luck - let me know how you get on!

Thought you might find this info useful, which was published in "The Telegraph" a while ago:-

"HBoS which issues Bank of Scotland, Intelligent Finance and Halifax branded debit cards, said: "Our policy is to investigate any claim that a customer makes where they have been unable to resolve a problem directly with the retailer."

It said the aim would be to refund the customer.

HBoS said: "We make hundreds of such refunds every month. We want our customers to feel secure about using their credit and debit cards, although we would still urge sensible caution - including checking out any company you are dealing with over the internet."

More Info from the same article in "The Telegraph":-

The following debit cards will support a valid claim by using charge-back systems for all purchases: Abbey, Alliance & Leicester, Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Citibank, Co-op, Coventry Building Society, Halifax, Intelligent Finance, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS and Smile.

All card issuers suggest you should try to sort any dispute out with the provider of the goods or services before taking the matter up with them.
Unfortunately, in practice, some are still not helpful even when you have done this. If a card company is not helping you in the way they have indicated they will, please contact The Telegraph at money@telegraph.co.uk or write to us at 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DT.

If you are a Halifax customer writing to Debit card services in Southend which is for LTSB customers won't get you far IMO.

Probably as far as trying to convince someone who works in banking that Visa offer protection to their debit card customers! ;)

I said that banks didn't offer guaranteed refunds under the CCA for debit card transactions. I stand by that statement.
One person alone on this mighty thread has received a refund so far from a debit card transaction. The poster in question has been turned down by the Halifax.

If you read the information I obtained from The Telegraph however, this customer should be able to receive a refund:

"HBoS which issues Bank of Scotland, Intelligent Finance and Halifax branded debit cards, said: "Our policy is to investigate any claim that a customer makes where they have been unable to resolve a problem directly with the retailer."

It said the aim would be to refund the customer.
