I am also a non bread sauce person but good we all have our own traditions
I make a yogurt mayo curry powder type sauce for the turkey very coronation chicken sauce ..DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

I've never had bread sauce. Always fancied trying it but no one is bothered about it so I haven't. One day.

Proper home made bread sauce is lush, & I wouldn't be surprised if its origins were a few centuries ago - the packet stuff is less good & I know a few folk who don't like bread sauce who have only ever tried that.

I had a sneaking feeling bread sauce could be divisive! 😆 I’d never tried it until meeting MrEH - they always had it in their house at Christmas, and he was astonished that we didn’t! The first recipe I found for it was the BBC Good Food one I still use, although I’ve altered the spicing a bit to my own taste - mine always gets the addition of allspice and a few additional cloves. The only ingredient I measure now is the quantity of milk, too - everything else is just by instinct.Much cooking done here over the last couple of days - sausage rolls, mince pies were done yesterday, and the red cabbage today. This year’s cabbage has dried apricots, sultanas and some mixed peel in it, the zest and juice of two clementines, and is spiced with the usual star anise, allspice and black pepper. Some Demerara sugar and some balsamic and a splash of water and it all just cooks down until the flavours all meld. Pigs in blankets were assembled this afternoon, and the bits to go to Mum’s tomorrow are portioned out ready.Bargains have also been acquired from various supermarkets. Al’s were doing 75% off everything dated today, tomorrow and Boxing Day when we went in this morning - I managed to get most of my salad using that discount by picking through for the freshest looking stuff, a couple of punnets of chestnut mushrooms, a pack of “halloumi in blankets”, a multigrain sourdough which has gone in the freezer, along with quite a few other bits and bobs too - it is, as predicted, now rammed, but we certainly won’t be starving for a while! I got into T’s this afternoon just as they were starting to remove the 15p veg but still managed to grab my parsnips and tatties - sprouts were nabbed yesterday and I’d already got shallots and a swede.Other MSE Stuff:
- I remembered to ask about spare giblets when we picked the turkey up - they had none but asked if we wanted the backbone from a crowned one - yes please! Given a bag that included the backbone with a decent amount of meat on it, plus two wings, so those have been stripped, the bones are set aside in the fridge ready to make stock and the salvaged meat (an ice cream box full!) has been cooked ready to make curry in a few days.
- lunch today featured some of the 75% off salad, the spare rashers of streaky bacon, three quarters of a sausage that didn’t go into the sausage rolls and a slice of bread that I had saved in case the bread sauce needed more crumbs. Browned off the sausage (cut into chunks) and the chopped up bacon with some chopped mushrooms, plus the cubes of bread and chucked that into the salad leaves to make a really nice and super frugal warm salad, which used up lots of bits too.- Presents all wrapped - and MrEH thriftily made use of all the scraps so we are just left with stuff still on the rolls - easier to store without risking it getting damaged, also used up the last of a roll of gift labels so we’ll need to look out for some more of those. The usual family gift bags will be making their way to Mum’s tomorrow, and no doubt we will get a number back in return ready to use again next year!- ham stock has been ladled out into two pots and - although quite salty - I think will work for soup as long as I use an equal quantity of ordinary veg or chicken soup ok with it too. And no added salt in the soup!- finally managed to nab a bar code for one of the Sky VIP Dairy Milk bars today so I’ve saved that ready to redeem when we are next in T’s.
- went everywhere we needed today on foot so no car use.Bad is made up with clean bedding ready to get into later, and we’re cosied up in front of the fire now although from the way I’m yawning I think I will be making use of that clean bedding pretty soon!Have a lovely day tomorrow all - may it be all you wish for and filled with peace, love and contentment.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
