Carpets can be quite personal, but for me definitely NOT a plain colour. Someone luckily not me always manages to knock a coffee over on it. Believe me it does not completely wash out. Also look out for static. If you are inclined to collect static (I am) then the more wool the better. The more irregular the pattern the less fitting it will take hopefully. I think that the more wool the longer a carpet tends to last but that is opinion only.

Basically don't buy a 4 metre wide carpet if your room is 5 metres wide.

No advice sorry. I only have one carpet in my spare room & it’s stripped. The best one I had ever was a bluey heather one & it lasted a very long time. Darker self coloured show every bit of fluff and forever need hoovering.

If you’re going for stair carpet, go for a kind of heavy ‘knit’ effect (rather than an open tuft) in an oatmeal - quietly hides the worst of foot traffic 😊

Always worth buying a decent underlay. In fact tbh, I would say the underlay is almost more important than the carpet - stops it rucking, keeps you warmer, dampens noise more, allows the carpet to last longer etc.

If you are having different carpets in different places (eg hallway to living room) having the same thresholds (chrome, brass, timber etc.) can help with visual continuity.

PS - after just one experience of laying carpet ourselves, we have both vowed to never, ever attempt it again … 😉

De lurking to say if you go for wool then watch out for moths, they ate a big chunk of ours under a sofa before we found it! Now go for man made and not noticed any different. Also dont skimp on underlay a good thick one is worth its weight. We used a local company for our carpet rather than a big chaim, great service and fittees and can see and feel samples really well. Is there anywhere local to you similar. #greenbee must have more ideas she seems very clued up on renovations.

I would agree with Baldybear about using a local company for all the reasons stated. Which is why I didn’t suggest a supplier as the ones I like are all MILES from you!! 😉

get very good underlay as you then don't have to spend as much on the actual carpet.

We went for the same carpet all through rather than changing colours and styles, looks much better

We’ve had carpets in high traffic areas for many years. We chose wool, a rusty brown with flecks easy to disguise the mud and detritus three teenagers, two cats a dog, two adults that walk in a forest and garden quite a bit. Still there and not too shabby after 21 years! Recently bought a carpet cleaner which is unbelievably good and revitalised the sitting room carpet that the front door opens onto. Looks amazing.
If you don’t have muddy booted folks and animals you could have a lighter colour which personally I’d be nervous about.
as others have said it’s best to go local. Then you can stomp on and complain if it’s not right, sit on one of their carpets and refuse to move if they don’t sort it out! Way more fun than trying to sort stuff out on line.

Local over big shed type shops they really do rip you off and their offers are not worth it if you compare to small local shop.
