Only ever bought a few carpets - one from JL which was excellent and did the upstairs at the cottage, one from a chain store in a previous house, again excellent and another from a private local company. Now here I'm going to differ slightly from the posters above. The local company did the whole house and the carpets were fine but the kitchen flooring was awful and when I complained they commented that the floor was in a poor state - not the case we had levelled that as part of the renovation. Ended up lifting it and tiling the floor.
Was reading with interest as thinking about stairs here that need a carpet.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Another one who recommends local small firm. I'd never had a plain carpet but really struggled this time, I'm going for an Abingdon tweed (navy with green flecks). But as it's not yet fitted can't comment further other to say it has stainguard, a ten year warranty, is apparently for heavy domestic use and my 90 year old friend who used to be in the industry approves.

With only two of us and no pets we went for the softest JL one and good underlay on the stairs and two bedrooms. The first and only carpet we've bought. Same colour throughout in a small place. Plus Scotchguard has been very helpful. We still have wooden floors and tiles downstairs but I have been surprised how well the high traffic areas have lasted on the stairs and upstairs. The main faff was adjusting the bottom of the doors afterwards as we hadn't thought about it beforehand. Ooh and painting before carpeting but you are a smart person who would know that already!

If you are thinking of getting a cat (because we are truly superb creatures), you might want to buy a very tough carpet. Just sayin', cos I've completely wrecked my meowmy Foxglove's landing carpet with me massive ace claws & am apparently a 'menace'. I have 3 cat scratchers but the landing carpet is me destruction area of choice.

Build admin. Mr PIP's bro (who's building the house next to ours with his partner) is having a bit of a meltdown over the cost of having to reinstall the kerb and is saying we should ignore the council. We are also very unhappy about having to do it, but it is a legal requirement and I'm not delighted about us being made to feel like the bad guys especially when we're doing all the effing work relating to it
Spec work
Kitchen appt, which was in person not online like I'd thought, so more steps, we were very efficient and didn't allow for spiel so out in 30 rather than 90 minutes 😁
Went pub to do more kitchen research

Sorry to hear BiL is being a source of stress. I hope he calms down and comes to a more rational understanding of the kerb issue …
Was the kitchen appointment helpful? Do you have a clearer sense of what you will go for?

Thanks @KajiKita, we've all had our meltdowns during this process so no hard feelings, just frustrating to not be able to say 'do you know how bloody hard we've been working on this complex and tedious and stressful thing on your behalf?!!'
Kitchen appt was helpful in that it confirmed that while we obviously care as its our home, we do not have energy left to care that much, so we're accepting that costs are probably a bit higher than we wanted to have what we like, but we're not so obsessed with kitchen perfection that we're going to pay stupid money over every little thing. Annoyingly it is near impossible to find pine wood style cupboard doors as wood frontage seems to be out of fashion and we just wanted something calm and simple. I'm sure we could find it but we do not have energy for faff and we're happy with the place's professionalism. We're going to go for mid-green instead, which should look good in all the seasons light.
Cheers @beanielou if it looks terrible then we can save money and replace doors in time, the main thing is to get a functioning kitchen in, but it's a nice colour so as long as it doesn't turn out bright pink we're grand
