I get it. Stairs are the 'spine' of the house and especially if it's open plan and a relatively small space (which I am getting the impression yours is).
Plus he has taken a decision ABOUT YOUR HOME which WAS NOT HIS TO TAKE!
A friend of mine did a self build and also had issues around the stairs, which were intended to be a real feature in the space she was creating and she had a similarly overwhelming response.
I hope the 'provocation response' gradually drops back today and you can genuinely get back into a Zen Calm state ready for the weekend. TBF it would probably do you good to have a break from Build Admin for a couple of days.

I would be blooming mad about the stairs too. From past experience you can’t let builders have free rein. I ended up with a few things I wouldn’t have chosen when we had a house renovation - I was in the office and Mr SA was “in charge”. I hope the stairs get changed to what you originally asked for.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)2 -
Speechless about the stairs. I would be rolling out use of “disappointed” AND “unacceptable” in the same sentence, he has to understand that he needs to put things right, surely?!
