That wasn’t his choice to make. He has to redo it and unpocket the extra cash he thought he was going to milk from the job … <cynical mode> …

Hmm. I take back my ‘Wowzers!’ and agree that the problem is firmly with the builder and not you. Feet stamping and fuming should occur forthwith and reparations ensue. At any point did you ask for half a wooden staircase? I doubt it.
When we had our bathroom refit the builder left saying all was completed. But there was no sealant to be seen anywhere. On questioning this he tried to say it wasn’t included and he’d told me at the start I’d have to find my own person to do this. Let’s just say that my straight talking led to a very nicely finished bathroom.
Absolutely fight your corner and when every tread is wooden I shall return with my ‘Wowzers’ and perhaps other congratulatory vocabulary.
    Good luck and sally forth.

  • Today is also not the day I am in the mood to be calm and practical about it. I have gone on build admin strike 😂

Oh PiP sorry they messed up the stairs. I would have been fuming too.
You are inventive and bright, so will find a solution...not today, but you will.
I can't help but be excited that there are walls, a roof and now stairs...
If you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them

OM Goodness the stairs. He has to put that right, that was not his call to make. Half and half is plain daft.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

I agree with @Watty1. If builders are being paid to fit specific stairs than that is what they should fit. I would be telling him to remove them & fit what was agreed. What a waste of time & energy.

  • Thanks all for your stairsy support, Mr PIP is going to the site on Saturday so we shall see. I feel a bit bad as he isn't a confrontational guy and I'm putting all the making-right on him, but if I get involved I will jeopardise our good relationship with our builder because I am just too incredibly cross.

    Anyhoo, today's doings

Sometimes stepping back from something like this, especially when it is so emotionally fraught, is the only sensible thing to do …

I assume you will be sending Mr PiP in prepped, with suitable ‘concepts’ such as withholding final payment of invoices if the issue is not rectified …
Please also tell Mr PiP that he has a whole bevvy of MSErs standing shoulder to shoulder with him! 💪😉😊
