I notice that Megatrain now goes to Sheffield. I wonder if this might help to keep the price down for you oi oi. You might have to book in advance though.

    Check out their destinations here.

New Megatrain routes are starting as from 14 July 2008. All on the following Virgin West Coast Voyager Trains:

04:58 Manchester Piccadilly - Glasgow Central
08:03 Birmingham New Street - Edinburgh Waverley
11:03 Birmingham New Street - Glasgow Central
21:03 Birmingham New Street - Preston
12:51 Edinburgh Waverley - Birmingham New Street
10:10 Glasgow Central - Birmingham New Street
20:10 Glasgow Central - Manchester Piccadilly

Initially there will be 40 seats on offer on each train per day. Prices will range from £1 to £9, plus 50p booking fee. Passengers can book upto 03:00 the day before departure.
If you go on www.megatrain.com and book for these services for travel on or after 14 July, the tickets should be available, until sold out.

(comments in the discussion may relate to earlier incarnations of the deal)

    What's the deal?

A selection of train routes are currently going very cheap, you just need to know where to look and what to do
    • London to Manchester route, sub-£10, until 14 August

Virgin Trains are selling dirt cheap tickets from London Euston to Manchester and vice versa, but do this and you can sometimes grab fares from as little as £1 each way if you're lucky, but sub-£10 is available for most people. The caveat is you need to print your tickets at home and ensure it's clear and legible. Click here for more help on printing tickets.

To book simply go to the Virgin Trains website, select your route (either to or from Manchester) and search the dates for the £1 fares. If you can't find £1 tickets, £3, £7 and £9 fares are available, still a bargain! You can now book for travel up to 14 August 2008 (though this offer has been regularly extended). Full terms and conditions.
    • Birmingham to Glasgow/Edinburgh route, £2.50 return.

Cheap trains operator Megatrain has added another route to its portfolio. Tickets can now be bought between Birmingham and Glasgow or Edinburgh on Virgin Trains' West Coast Mainline.

Fares start at £1 each way plus the 50p booking fee. While the very cheapest fares can go quickly and there are only one or two journeys a day, if the times suit you then it's a no-brainer.

Remember when searching it'll also bring up fares for sister site Megabus so check carefully that you're looking at the rail fares (you should be able to tell from the train and bus symbols next to the train times when you've done a search).
    • Birmingham to London for a tenner

This is a nifty service to slash the cost of travelling between Birmingham and London. Use Chiltern Railways special ticket to your mobile service which costs from £5 each way and you could pay just £10 to get to London.

While the route is slower and takes you from Birmingham Snow Hill or Moor Street to Marylebone rather than Birmingham New Street to Euston, if you're willing to spend a little longer getting there then the price difference can be huge.

I've been looking at the Virgin website as I have to go to London for (part of) a day on Aug 27 - does anyone know if this offer is likely to be extended?
Or has anyone any other ideas how to cheapest day return to London from either Leeds or Manchester (I'm right in the middle). Fingers crossed!

    Hi annie,

It has been extended every month for a while now, so while there's no guarantees, you've a decent chance. It'll be included in the weekly email if it does get extended.

VIRGIN Pendalino trains from Liverpool until the 7th September have downgraded coach G from 1st class to standard class.

Coach G has 1st class seats in and although you will not get the 1st class at seat service you do get the wider reclining seat and additional lighting.

It might be that all VIRGIN Pendalino routes will be operating the same policy as maybe not much 1st class business travel takes place during the summer.

So when booking ask for reserved seats in coach G.

    Kerching!!

Re breaking your journey - what about just buying the cheapest ticket you can to just get you through the ticket checks & onto the platform? Who is to know which train you got on or off? Obviously this will only work for a fairly busy station......
Pity these cheap Manchester - London tickets don't seem to be available at weekends.

    The terms & conditions state:

    Break of Journey

You may not break and resume your journey at a station in-between except to change to/from appropriate connecting trains where these are shown on your ticket(s).

You must board and alight at the stated departure and arrival stations. You may not board or alight at otherpoints on the route. If you do a penalty or full fare may apply.
  • Hey guys, any news on whether this offer (Virgin trains Manc to London) will be extended beyond August 14th?
