    Hello Hawkrider123

I love your thread! I LOVED to read when I was younger and still do (i'm 27), but my little sister (she is 17) is just like you and learning to love books slowly. I think your mum has had a great idea - and I think that you could become very rich in terms of what you learn from reading as well as quite rich from your Mum's kind prize money!

I have been trying to think of some books you might like. I loved Animal farm and read it when I was about your age - but I suggest you ask your mum if she has read it and what she thinks. She might think you would like it better in a few years time.

HAve you read the Chronicals of Narnia - they are lovely books. I also enjoyed the Hobbit.

My husband has just read the golden compass and really lilked it. If you read it perhaps your mum could rent the DVD of the film for you as your prize?

If I think of anymore I will post again, but I will be following your thread with interest - Good luck!

Hi Hawkrider & Whitewing though you might like to know that on the front of today's Daily Telegraph there is a big banner headline '100 books every child should read'. If you go on to their website and click Arts and then books you will see the article.

    Thank you Ellidee and r.mac,

Am working this weekend and have been very busy with the dreaded tax return (altho must admit I let the accountant handle most of it as I'm a wimp).

But I will update the first post with all these new bits of info in the week at some point.

  • Whitewing, don't forget to try readitswapit.co.uk Especially if you are trying to save money, you can swap instead of buying!
Keep it up, Hawkrider, I am enjoying your posts.

Well, it is a bit of a struggle to keep up the momentum now he is back at school. His official bedtime is 7.30pm and at the moment he is sleeping right through until 7am. I have no problems with that, but it is not leaving him with much time outside of school what with travelling and a couple of clubs he is doing.

Anyway, in a bid to encourage him to keep going, I took Hawkrider to HSBC to open a new bank acct with a cash card that he can view online. While I was busy swapping my business acct over, he took the initiative to open a savings acct too! So we have decided that he will keep his other savings acct with Lloyds for his birthday and Christmas money etc. His HSBC acct will be used purely with the proceeds of this challenge. He will have to work himself out a mini budget as he will be expected to provide each family member (Mum, Stepdad, Grandad,2xGrans, Great Aunt, 2xUncles, 1xAunty) with a small gift on birthdays and Xmas. Like any true MSEer, he will be able to make presents to cut costs! The rest of the money is under negotiation. He won't be allowed to waste it completely but may save up for something.

    We'll see how that works.

We've also been given some Burger King vouchers so he has been promised a trip to Burger King with his friend once he has reached his 10th book review. He's aiming for Monday. He does have about 3 books on the go at the minute. Seems to prefer doing the reviews en masse, probably because I'm always using the computer!

Thanks for all your tips and encouragement. It is making all the difference to him.

  • What a fantastic idea!!! Whitewing, just to pick up on one of your posts from a couple of pages back, Blitzcat is one of my favourites I could re-read that over and over!

Just to add some more ideas in the mix, how about:

    Brian Jacques 'Redwall' series
Tamora Pierce (she's got a few series out at the moment I think)
Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh - Robert C O'Brien
Racso & The Rats of Nimh )
R-T, Margaret and the Rats of Nimh ) both by Jane Leslie Conly (O'Brien's daughter)
The Deptford Mice series - Robin Jarvis

Hope these give some more ideas - am off to pull out my Deptford Mice for a re-read!!!!!!

  • :hello: Hiya Hawkrider!

Just read about your challenge on your mum's siggy (hello Whitewing ;) :hello: ) over on the Live on £4000 a year Challenge.

I think this is a great idea - and very lucrative for you - both financially and intellectually! :T

I have an 11 year old daughter who absolutely L:heartpuls ves reading. I wanna tell her about your challenge, but am afraid to because if she wants me to pay her for reading I will have no money left! LOL :rotfl:
She introduced me to Michael Morpurgo and I read Private Peaceful. Really enjoyed it, although I cried a lot! What did u think of it?
I actually came here to tell u about the bookcrossing website , yet reading through the posts I see that someone has already suggested it :D .
I love reading your reviews and, like my daughter, you are encouraging me to read books again - thank you! :j Keep up the good work

  • Hi Hopeless

I really enjoyed Private Peaceful and mum cried a lot about it too. Thank you for thinking about suggesting something though. What you could do is let your daughter join the challenge but not give her so much money per book.
Thank you for reading this thread.

  • Book Review for The French Confection By Anthony Horowitz

This book really draws you in. It is one of those books you don't want to put down. It is about the Diamond brothers winning a holiday to Paris. It looks like their luck is in but their up to their necks in trouble. Their dream holiday soon turns into a nightmare.

I read this book because it was one of the books my mum bought me for xmas.

I think this book is for 9-10 years+. Have a good day all of you bye
