Does anyone here make their own pasties? I bought some pasty-makers & hoped that they would come with a basic instruction sheet - a recipe & how long to cook etc, but nothing.

Can anyone give me some helpful advice on which pastry to use, how long to cook them for, etc? Am hoping to add them to husband's packup as something different from sandwiches every now & then.

  • When I've made pasties in the past, I have used either shortcrust or puff pastry. I've bought the packet mixes where you just add water, sorry I cant give exact amounts needed.

My family faves are, cheese and onion pasties. I use shortcrust pastry mix, a packet of instant mash, grated cheese, pinch of mustard powder, finely shoped onion. Then bake in the oven till they are lightly browned......could be around 20-30mins, depending on heat setting, I usually cook them on a medium heat.

I really need to get to grips with this pastry stuff, but I do know that the traditional cut of meat for Cornish pasties is beef skirt.

I make a pasty filling which is basically fried minced lamb, carrots, turnip, potato and onion with a splash of worcester sauce and lots of pepper. I use puff pastry and just cook until browned.

I've added these posts to an earlier thread which has some good tips and recipes in it.

    Hiya

I know there is a 'cornish pasty' thread on here ... but I couldn't find a thread for 'alternative fillings'

I have 2 packs of puff pastry to use and I am planning to make some cheese, onion and potato pasties .... but has anybody made any other yummy fillings for pasties using everyday food items?

    Cheers!
