It maybe noise that could help. How about putting on a gentle CD quietly or the radio on sleep and see if that helps....I have a fan on which is white noise but that HAS to go as expensive & I fall asleep with it on! Need to change to the radio version! Its possibly a comfort thing so try setting the scene for bed...set a routine..bath, pj's, no internet, watching TV with no other stimulus (ie chatter on phone etc) for an hour before you go to bed? Horlicks can help & making sure you're not hungry or thirsty before you go to sleep. Re the panic. Lie in bed & focus on your toes and breathing...calmly work your way up your body, breathing in & out gently and see if that helps. I usually fall asleep before I get to my tummy!!

    ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........

    its workin for me here..:o

Well day 4 nearly over for me (should have said ONLY day 4 as it feels longer). My dh, who is supporting me by giving up, is sat next to me drinking a beer:confused: . Mind you the poor thing is in shock as we've been tidying out the bedroom and he's had to part with some of his clothes, magazines and other rubbish:shocked: . Having said that - he still managed to hold onto 3 wardrobes full of stuff - I've only got one. Mind you I'll be working at reducing his shirts down by removing the odd one every now and then;) The magazines are stored away in a box which I think may get mistakenly thrown out in a couple of months time.

I'm off for a bath and then bed. See you tomorrow.

Now it's Friday... so going for a run after work, and then to the cinema. Easy!

    Hi all
I've kind of fallen noto the wagon this last month and I have no idea why. I used to drink wine most nights but I've somehow got out of the habit of it. Think it may have been when I had flu so didnt drink for a few days. I've not given up completely - still having a drink when I go out or have friends round (once a week ish) but I'm hoping that the much lower quantities will be good for my waistline and budget (I was buying a box of wine a week = £60 a month = scary!!)

However, I've noticed a side effect thats really getting me down - I'm finding it very difficult to get to sleep. I suffer from OCD and anxiety/panic attacks and my symptoms are worse when I'm in bed (its quiet, dark, no distractions - just me and my thoughts) whereas before a couple of glasses of an evening would relax me and I'd fall to sleep no problem, now I lay awake frightened and panicking.
I have had help from dr with this - have tried all sorts in past to no avail - however, sounds wrong but alcohol helped me manage my symptoms in a way. The way things are at the minute is horrible and I hate the sinking feeling of dread as soon as bedtime comes around. I know I probably used alcohol as a crutch, which is bad, but it was only a couple of glasses of an evening - nothing meriting AA.
Bit bleak for a light hearted thread - I know - sorry guys. Any advice?

Hi Roxie. Have you tried audiobooks? I too can't sleep with just my thoughts to keep me company - have to have either the telly on (expensive w/electricity, annoying for others) or an audiobook (a cassette will switch itself off, v. economical). The library usually has loads (working my way through Lord of the Rings! will take forever).

    Its quiet...
Its Saturday morning and there are NO empty cans to throw into the recycling box... can this REALLY be MY house.??

How did everyone manage their 1st Friday night?
Didnt find it TOO hard here, I spent the £12 I usually buy a box of beer with, on 3 DVDs 4litres of coke and popcorn...(me and the kids all high on sugar and E,numbers all evening:rotfl:no wonder they play up, that stuff is lethal )

I actually still have cans in the fridge too and managed to ignore them, but I may put them away somewhere warm now so they dont tempt me when I am struggling later.

Welcome aboard Girlfrommars and any other new joiners.

  • Morning, we had a nice evening in front the TV with cup of tea (me) hot chocs (kids)and woke up with no headache, not normal for a Saturday morning!! I was thinking of boxing up the wine/gin left over from Christmas and putting in loft to avoid temptation can then get out for special occasions. Well thats the plan anyway, we'll see how long it lasts lol!!!;)

    "The Loft"..good idea...
I could put my stash up there when I put away the xmas decs later..
Climing a ladder for a can of warm beer should be easier to resist than reaching for the fridge.

  • Have removed all alcohol to loft!! Gave me quite a workout too!;)

    Hi All,

Well I made it through Friday night but it was tough...after a rough day at work trying to settle without my wine was a trial but I DID IT :j:j
Unfortunately not feeling great (start of a cold) so didn't get the 'high' of waking feeling good on Sat morning but there's always next week!
    Onwards and upwards....
