But, usually, Agile prices are negative, at free session times, so there's no point in opting for free when you could be being paid.1

Are you sure about that? These are this evening’s rates and that is what I will pay for my normal usage. OK, any extra might be free but not normal usage.Spoonie_Turtle said:
No it's a free electricity session as long as you're signed up with Octoplus. Not related to Agile at all https://octopus.energy/free-electricity/JKenH said:MikeyPGT said:
For everyone except Agile customers it seems. My Agile rate is showing as 9.8p at 9pm this evening.Free electric for an hour tonight 9-10pm from Octopus for all customers ...Are you saying that you cannot use any extra energy, or that you will not? Or perhaps that you don't want to opt in to the scheme to benefit from some free energy?I'm on Agile, and I'll be making the most of both sessions. Agile is a tariff best used by those who can load shift to take advantage of low prices. If you don't have that flexibility in your consumption or a willingness to use it to save money, perhaps Agile isn't the best tariff for you. Or perhaps you just feel you can fit all of your consumption into the negative price windows overnight.
There's no harm in signing up as you get the best price available, either negative or zero. I've always been paid for sessions where Agile pricing was negative. There is no requirement to opt in to each session. I opted in last year and have remained signed up for sessions.Netexporter said:But, usually, Agile prices are negative, at free session times, so there's no point in opting for free when you could be being paid. The way it works is that you initially get billed at your normal rate, and if you end up paying anything for the extra energy, this is refunded via bill credit.1 -
I think I see the confusion.JKenH said:

They're called free electricity sessions, but what it actually means is any usage above your normal amount (as determined by taking an aversge from that tineslot on the past 10 weekdays or 4 weekends) is free.
So there is free electricity available, people just have to make use of it.2 -
Exactly, if I just use electricity as normal I pay the quoted Agile rate, so my normal usage isn’t free. All I was taking issue with was the post “ Free electric for an hour tonight 9-10pm from Octopus for all customers ...”. We will all be paying something for our electricity between 9 and 10pm.Spoonie_Turtle said:

So there is free electricity available, people just have to make use of it.Northern Lincolnshire. 7.8 kWp system, (4.2 kw west facing panels , 3.6 kw east facing), Solis inverters, Solar IBoost water heater, Mitsubishi SRK35ZS-S and SRK20ZS-S Wall Mounted Inverter Heat Pumps, ex Nissan Leaf owner)0 -
True, my normal usage is around 0.025 kWh for each half hour slot, so I'll be paying around half a penny for that first little bit, then the rest for free. Only those who don't normally import anything during those timeslots will get all of their energy for free.0

I'm away so missing out in the free electric. Thought my thermal store would at least heat up but for some reason the Octopus Energy home assistant add on decided it didn't like my API key so didn't see the price was below 0.0

Missed the negative pricing and had to settle paying 1.3p for 20 min run of my portable heater instead.0
