Wow - just swapped back to Agile.  I took less than a minute to get the email with the T&Cs and the change was instantaneous.  Now watch the wind drop and gas prices soar!

Satisfied customer of Octopus Agile - past savings on average 33% of standard tarrif

Deep seated hatred of Scottish Power and all who sail in her - would love to see Ofgem grow a pair and actually do something about it.

Being off Agile for a week has made me realise how much, mostly only in the past month or so, I've changed my cooking habits because of the high prices in general and then higher peak. It's lovely to not need to think what time it is before using the oven or washing machine.
Personally, life should be as normal as possible and not chasing savings if it means changing what and when you eat, dishes are washed by the dw depending on battery charge, ditto washing m/c . If battery low time shift those to overnight cheap slot.
We both have health issues and need warmth 22 all day and 20.5 overnight and need good nutritional food regularly. Saved last year on gas tracker now fixed @5.74 ave last year about 15-20% cheaper, it may make a comeback after sept who knows.

"I should think the chances of Octopus offering the zero standing charge option on the Agile tariff are pretty remote, it will probably only be on the standard tariffs."
They may be forced to offer that by Ofgem, but a version of Agile or Cosy where the peaks are prohibitively expensive may also work with TOU with a zero s/c.
Looks like OFGEM are proposing three options in relation to standing charges (https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/consultation/introducing-zero-standing-charge-energy-price-cap-variant

    • Increasing the price of each unit of energy

    • Charging in blocks - so customers pay a higher unit rate until a certain amount of energy is used, then a lower price thereafter

    • A block system in which customers pay a lower unit rate until a certain amount of energy is used, and a higher price thereafter

Or they just bang the standing charge onto the unit rate.
There's essentially zero chance that Ofgem will insist on Octopus offering a zero-standing-charge version of any of their smart tariffs.
It's most likely that Ofgem will mandate ZSC versions of the SVT, and less likely that they'll ask for ZSC versions of conventional fixes. But complex tariffs like Agile or Tracker, or Green Energy Tide, or Tomato's various TOU offerings? They're not in Ofgem's spotlight, since it's an active (and informed) choice for a consumer to take one of those.

For anyone clicking on that link, you need to delete the trailing parenthesis.
    Apologies, now fixed!

They definitely want everyone to have smart meter, smart meters make most with TOU tarrifs, so Agile would be a perfect tarrif to drop SC - it's a really big win for everyone.

With a normal capped tariff when someone uses 100% of electricity between 16-19 octopus makes up loses from standing charge, but if people were taught to avoid peak times / paid extra for them - then that would work fine.

Also would bring more TOU tarrifs for average person without expensive green-tech.

    No they don't.

Energy retailers pass most of the standing charge on, they are just collecting the money.
