few cheapish slots during the night, good timing to get a washing done through this high spell
Will it be even cheaper tomorrow night? Looks like more wind tomorrow.

As Agile Predict suggests this is the lowest we'll get for a bit, I'm taking @matt_drummer's approach and have electric heating programmed for the sub 6p/kWh slots along with the immersion. I've also got some cool wash laundry done earlier on the heated airer (programmed with the electric heating), and will put a hot wash on too. And possibly the dishwasher, even though it may not be completely full.

Washing machine will be going on here, and I’ll get the dehumidifier running in the spare room where the airer is to dry the load from last night too.

Do washing machines use that much power?  Logically I would assume so as they heating water, and have to power a motor, but days when I do my washing the measured usage doesnt budge much.

I think that's what it's about: Less how much the rate / kWh is, rather what the savings or lack of amount to in £000's

Our washing machine draws around 2kW on the smart meter, and kicks in and out for around 30mins heating the water during a typical 40C one hour washing cycle (not heating constantly). The second half of the cycle is just the motor spinning the drum, so negligible in comparison. So my guess it's using maybe ~1kWh for a 30-40C short cycle wash. Google AI thinks the average cycle is 1.3-1.8kWh, but maybe that is for hotter / longer cycles (obviously a 60C wash will use more than a 30C wash).

A 40 degree shortened cotton wash (takes 1 hr 15 and primarily reduces how long it rocks back and forwards for) uses roughly 1.3kWh in mine. As you'd expect reducing it to 30 degrees uses noticeably less but I'm not yet confident it cleans so well. I only use the drier from wet if the power is cheap/negative but looking at last night that adds another 2 kWh

I use the Eco 40-60 was for most things these days.  Takes ages but uses only 0.27 kWh unless I fill the full 9kg in which case it uses another 0.5 kWh. So little I don't really care when it runs but tend to stick it on timer to start at about 6AM so I can deal with it first thing.
