Cherryfudge said:I've been out buying ingredients for the chilli and noticed that some of the spices are measured in tablespoons not teaspoons., which sounds right for the whole quantity but not for my very English spice collection! I think I need to move to somewhere with a multicultural supermarket.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)2

Agree that supermarket world food aisles can be good value for spices. I also use our local eco-refill shop. I know that these can be few & far between, but they are worth investigating where they do occur. I like that I can fill a large container with spices, or just buy a couple of tablespoonsful, depending on how often I use it/what it is. I like to save the round lidded yoghurt pots for this purpose & have sometimes paid as little as 13p for half of one of those full of some or other spice....which would be more than the contents of the little supermarket glass jars, so defo savings to be made there from not needing to pay for the packaging.

They used to be just typed but laminated you can wipe over. They can be quite novel. 15gm of melted butter in one part of the recipe & 2oz of butter in another. I still have no idea how I got there but luckily my scales will switch from one to the other. All these years cooking & I still can't manage without a recipe!!0

I made the full quantity - it's huge!
Our eco refill store is very good and I fully second what you say, @foxgloves. Cheaper than supermarket jars of spices and much fresher. Today, I just didn't have time to go so far, and our local supermarkets aren't very good in the world food department. When I go to the big one at the retail park I love getting the big bags of dried beans.
Now I made it with the refried beans and the whole thing is a pretty good mix but to be 100% to my taste I wanted something extra. DH and I thought it might be pineapple or sultanas (not Mexican, I know), but with another six portions left I have plenty of opportunity to experiment!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. Chilli sounds good but not for me as I don’t do chilli 🥵🥵🥵January spends - £587.581 -
@Cherryfudge I added extra chipotle paste and two red chillies to make it hotter and a huge amount of smoked paprika just because I love it so much I’m sure I could just eat it straight out of the packet 😆I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)2

That’s another working week done ✔️
Met my retired work friends for lunch which was lovely. Then popped into Lid! on the way home. Had enough time to drop off my work bag and shopping back home before it was back out to the hairdressers. Good job the salon is at the end of my road as really didn’t feel like going out again. Probably ruined my hair by jumping straight in the bath when I got home, sorry Mr hairdresser 😬 Why do hairdressers always think you’re going out on the lash when you have your hair done 🤔
Tonight’s dinner was air fried salmon with steamed veg. Exercise was just over 20,000 steps. Not done anything particularly money saving today unless you count the PA survey I did at 5am just before I got up this morning - oh and my lunch was only £6 for a large glass of wine and a small roast veg pizza (Spoons) 🙂I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)4 -
