I don't know about 'all this extra kit', it's only a 99p game, a usb stick and an xbox/usb cable (which will be useful later for plugging a mouse etc into the Xbox). I'd much rather do it that way than go near my Xbox harddrive. :D

For the usb you can get a stick/pen that takes SD memory cards from Poundland.

What's all this about extra kit? Yes there are the memory card or special game tricks, but all I used was the 'hot swap' method, where you boot your PC and XBox at the same time, then connect the XBox's hard drive to the PC. Not for the faint hearted or novice by any means, and it took a few tries, but much cheaper and much less hassle than chasign round shops for golddust games or memory cards. The links for the method are somewhere in this thread, and if you can't be bothered looking, you definately won't be bothered with the method!

    Agreed.

I modded my console a several years ago and the chip required soldering - it was a nightmare. Never again.

When I modded my nephew's console a couple of years later I bought a solderless chip, it was even worse than the solder one.

When I modded my dad's console a while later I used the 'hotswap softmod' method and it was a hell of a lot easier. I agree it was a little scarey, but if you do your research and take your time it's defintely the way to go.

I'm trying to find a Game store that has the original xbox for sale (none near me do and they all look at me funny for asking) as I'm desperate to have a spare should mine give up. When I do eventually get one, I'll be using the 'Hot-Swap' method.

I tried the older sort of those and couldn't get it to work, though I've found them a bit hit and miss. Haven't tried the new one they're selling at the moment.

The usb datatraveler that I used was only £5 or so, and of course can be again used with the Xbox in the future.

Oh by the way if you have only a VGA monitor, and no LCD television with phono inputs, well the xbox does not connect to VGA.

The Xbox 360 has a lead specially, but not the Xbox.

If anyone has a VGA box I can buy, PM me - until then no Xbox for me :(

I am trying to turn a lcd vga monitor into a Freeview TV for the bedroom. There are video to vga convertors around, that should work on the Xbox. Vary a lot in price and what they do, so I'm still looking.
There have been some on Ebay, but there is one that seems reasonable at the old Henry's Edgware Road shop for £30

    Or this from Amazon.

if you are semi decent with a soldering iron you can mod the xbox with a VGA port.

Anyone within easy distance of Currys in St Albans, there are 2 Exploders there, should be 47 or 97p in clearouts,

Mentioned in the Curry's 97p games thread, thought it might interest someone here.

  • And now for the final word on 1.6 vs. non 1.6 boxes:

1.0 through 1.3 boxes work with all available features mentioned anywhere regarding the xbox. The only thing they're bad at is slightly lower than average quality RGBs Scart output due to some sloppy conversion programming.

1.4 - 1.5 boxes I'm not too sure about, apparently their support for various linuxy things is between 1.0-1.3 and 1.6. I'm thinking they have the same RGB issues, lack the xbv linux tool for flicker filter correction, but don't suck like 1.6s.

1.6. If you're doing anything other than linux they're great. RGBs output has a glossier, crisper, clearer look to it, but the difference is very very slight on my mid-size cheapo 4:3 CRT. What it sucks at is RGBs output in linux, which it just doesn't do. So anyone thinking of using an rgb scart or vga cable *under linux* (for mythtv useage etc) don't get a 1.6. You also can't change output resolution, flicker filter settings and various other things on it, and believe me i've tried everything but code my own driver.

So... now I know which is best, I'm getting rid of my 1.6 on ebay. If anyone wants it (preloaded with XBMC and linux) search for my id - pepsi_max2k. And curse ebay for banning any mention of xbmc (so it's now *not*;o);o);o) on the box, they be damned if they pull it now...) and any mention of google checkout too.

I'm also putting up an easy softmod kit consisting of splinter cell game and memory card with correct ndure savegame hacks on it in about a week. If anyone here wants it before then, pm me a good offer ;)
