Does anyone know how to boot to a live Linux CD?
I have burnt xebian 1.1.4 on CDR then CDRW and both times the CD won't boot or recognise - and yes I've burnt the disc correctly (ISO image file etc).
I'm a bit miffed as I know there are compatibility issues with the drives and some discs so I've tried both types of disc on both xboxes to no avail. Is tehre anyway to get it to boot?
Does the disc need to be in from the start of boot, or do I need to log into the linux build inside mech assault or can i just load it from xbmc?
Regards

I've managed to run xdsl from a cd on mine, its designed specifically to run on Xboxes.

If you have an older dashboard, rent or buy a newer (post halo 2) game with "Xbox LIVE" capability (I used FIFA 97) - boot the game and attempt to connect to xbox live (it doesn't matter if you aren't connected to anything) - this will update the dash for you.
Buy an Action Replay.
Rent (or buy a cheap 2nd hand copy of) Splinter cell (not its sequels) - any version (even the "classics" re-issue) - (I reccomend splinter cell, as you don't have to be carefull about which version you buy, and it's dirt cheap to get hold of)
Install a bit torrent client i.e ‘Azureus’ (Google it) on your PC.
Go to ISO hunt (www[dot[isohunt[dot]com) - search "Softmod installer deluxe" - download the CD or DVD version - it has more options than the basic version.
burn the CD/DD from the download.
Using your action replay, copy the 2 saves from the splinter cell directory (in your download) onto your memory card (despite reports to the contrary, the one that came with you AR is fine)
Using the standard xbox dash, copy the 2 game saves from the memory card, to your xbox hard drive.
boot splinter cell, start a game, when asked to load a profile use the game save to load the player "linux", then go to "missions"
The xbox will crash, then reboot to the softmod installer menu.
Go to the "backup" option on the softmod menu, there are 3 different things that can be backed up (C drive, Eprom, and Microsoft Dash), back up all 3.
Go to "install softmod" then choose "duel boot", then "microsoft dash / hacked dash" - you will be offered a choice of 2 different hacked dashboards, it really doesn't matter which one you choose.
Once it's installed the xbox will reboot, remove splinter cell and close the CD tray.
Your XBOX is now modded; you can boot to the standard dashboard by powering up with the eject button (leave the tray open until it's fully booted) or as a modded x-box by powering up with the power button (the light on the xbox will be green or orange depending on which dash you boot).
Now your xbox will boot from standard cdrs and dvd-rs (but usually not dvd+rs).
Boot the SID disc that you downloaded and burned to install other software (including XBMC).
Thanks for that - guess I was finding it a bit too much - will try it this weekend and let you know.0 -
Replaced my fan today with a 70mm acoustifan from here: http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2508.html
And it is so quiet in comparison, it fits perfectly and you don't need to use any screws as it is held in place by the harddrive holder[I don't get any vibrations either]

so long as the xbox is modded beforehand (mine uses krayzie's ndure softmod), then stick the cd in, turn off, then boot the cd still in the drive and it should load straight up after the ms logo.
if not, it's probably the cd media, have you got a dvd burner to try, or any other cd media? you could also try changing the track at once / disc at once setting and burn at the slowest speed possible.0 -
I read somewhere the XBOX drives can be very fussy on what media it can read - but CDRW usually works.
You could have a shot at xdsl which has a frugal install option - so you ftp it direct to your xbox - and run it equivalent to a live install but from hard drive. Destructions here http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/XDSL_HOWTO - look at FTP install section
Did this a few days back - and although it ran fine would only work via scart not s-video connection to tv - and it didn't look too clever so I gave up. But if you've got xbox hooked to a monitor or a decent telly might be worth the effort.0 -
i would say if i ts giving issues then try a DVD-r.for all they cost its worth it to go with the dvd-r0
-
The ISO file however has the wrong coding to be burnt to a DVD, can only be burnt to a CD, or should I try expanding the ISO and then re-burning it to a DVD with Magic ISO or something? [The CDRW didn't work after putting it in for boot, just made the boot time longer]
Does it depend on what way I did the softmod? I used ndures mod with mechassault.Student Moneysaving Expert :beer:0 -
