I've been trying to upgrade the HDD in my 1.3 XBOX today but when I run Chimp I can't see a menu. I've got a 3 line header about Xbox Linux then a blank screen. I get kicked out of my FTP session when it runs and I haven't managed a Telnet connection. I've downloaded a fresh copy of Chimp but still have the same issue. Can anyone help please?0

help.....done soft mod to xbox & managed to hook up to my wireless PC via uPNP so able to watch avi. files as long as they live in certain (seemingly random) folders.
problem is I've decided XBMC would use my music/picture/video files on my PC better if connected through SMB....and for love nor money can I get the XBMC to 'see' my PC (XP) although uPNP continues to work...anyone any tips on how to setup etc.
also, as a matter of interest, what sort of apps is XBMC good for running?
also, any idea how to change the RSS feed on the initial menu screen on XBMC...
many thanks0 -

Do you have a firewall on your PC, such as ZoneAlarm, which could be blocking access from the Xbox? If so, make sure they are both on the same range of IPs and setup the firewall to allow access for that range of IPs, eg 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.2550 -

I’ve done this twice now (with a 1.3 and a 1.4) – I understand the procedure is the same from 1.1 right up to 1.5, and It’s very easy. If you’ve ever fit a new drive in your PC, you’ll breeze through it.
I haven’t tried it yet with a 1.6, but I know the theory – 1.6 info is provided below, but best to check with someone who’s tried it.
You Will need:
T19 + T20 screwdrivers
A Hard drive power splitter / Y cable (pennies from any pc building shop)
A Larger hard drive
1. Install CHIMP as a utility (it's on the SID disc).
2. Unplug the Xbox
3. Open up the x-box.
4. Remove the HDD.
5. Set the Jumper on the original HDD to "master"
6. Replace original HDD.
7. Set the jumper on the new HDD to "Slave"
8. Remove IDE and power cables from the DVD drive.
9. plug the DVD drive's power cable into the splitter.
10. Plug the IDE cable loosly back into the DVD drive.
11. Plug the power splitter into both the new HDD and the DVD drive.
12. Plug in, and power up the Xbox.
13. Run "Chimp"
14. Once Chimp is running, unplug the IDE from the DVD drive, and plug it into the new HDD.
15. Using Chimp "scan drives"
16. Check that both drives are found.
17. Select “clone master to slave” – this will take a while…
18. When finished select “lock slave”
19. Power down and unplug the xbox.
20. Set your new HDDs jumper to “cable select”.
21. Disconnect all drives.
22. Remove the power splitter.
23. Refit the DVD drive, and fit your new HDD.
24. Power up and test
25. If all is okay, re assemble your x-box,
26. Theoretically you can use the old xbox drive in a PC now, but it’s only 8gig, so I’d label it, and put it somewhere safe – if your new HDD ever dies, you’ll be able to use the original to rescue your xbox – once used in a PC, this will not work.
V1.6 users:
I haven’t done this myself, but I understand that the 1.6 can be CHIMPed as follows
You Will Need:
Everything listed above.
A PC or laptop with network card.
A Network crossover cable.
1. Learn how to FTP your Xbox (see elsewhere).
2. follow steps 1 – 11 above
3. connect your PC to your xbox via the crossover cable
4. Follow from step 12 above, until your xbox looks as though it’s crashed (usually step 13 or 15)
5. When the xbox looks as though it’s crashed, click “Start >>> Run” (on your PC)
6. On your OC, type “CMD” in the “run” box, click OK
7. CHIMP should now appear on your PC, proceed as above (picking up where you left off) until after step 19 (using your PC keyboard and monitor, instead of your Xbox controller and TV.)
8. disconnect your PC from the Xbox
9. Continue from step 20 onwards/
I have used the following guide and can confirm it works with 1.6 versions.

It uses Xboxhdm to prep the new HDD for Xbox use rather than CHIMP.0 -

cheers...I'll have a play...feel like I've missed something as it appears vista has this 'choose people to share with' dialog box but I don't get anything like that on XP, just turn on file sharing etc...
will start again from scratch...
I bet its NTL netguard/windows firewall/belkin router cocking things up but it lets the uPnP through...which sounds odd

Us ethe techfreaks guide I posted above. It is really quite simple and easy to upgrade your HDD. You just drag and drop a few files (using ftp) from your current xbox to your HDD then burn a xboxhdm cd. connect your new xbox HDD to a pc and boot up using the xboxhdm cd. Follow the techfreaks guide and you are done in 10 minutes maximum.0 -

as said use the guides posted.
the xbox uses a tweaked FAT(FATX) file system so you need to use xbox based tools0 -
