as said cd's can be hit or miss.
also be sure to check the formats.
ive seen a few recently in the hi definition format(cant recall the file name)
    that xbmc struggles with
however i just put anything on dvd-r or +r with the bitsetting on DVD-rom
tbh if you can just stream everything

Many thanks again for the help.

Yep - it seems that the problem was that it does not like cds - as it plays ok a divx burned onto a dvd - although if I am gonna burn a dvd I might as well convert to dvd format - which kinda defeats the purpose.

Anyhow - maybe I should look into this streaming - guess I would need a wireless adaptor - have seen them on ebay - any recommendations for types etc?

Also appart from xbmc which apps should I be making use of?

    what have you got?

as for burning divx onto dvd,you get many films on a dvd so thats what i do.
EDIT: dont forget to not burn multisession.if you do the xbox will only see the 1st session

i prefer a wired connection for streming, but if you go wireless you need a wireless bridge.

plenty of guides around on sharing

briefly;set up sharing on the pc,workgroup etc ,making sure the account is password protected
in xbmc all yuo do is add pc ip,username and password
then log into workgroup shares via video

I use the scripts - bbc radio - play again is good and Apple movie previews from the US. Most of the tv streaming scripts seem to be out of date now.

Wireless - get an old linksys WRT54GL v1.x- has bigger ram - so should throughput faster. Needs tomato or DD-WRT firmware to make it into a wireless bridge. Personally I use a Buffalo WHR-G54S with tomato firmware which I found is not perfect at streaming video (but my streaming pc ain't the fastest piece of kit) so I usually ftp the media to the Xbox wirelessly then play direct off the xbox.

    I stream wirelessly using a Belkin FD7130 (?) running DD-WRT and a Netgear WGE-111 for the bedroom...

XBMC is let down only by it's inability to play true HD... mine is upscaling to 1080i through a component cable - just needed to reflash as NTSC.

    Awesome little box :)

Oh, and the latest version has a script called XBMCLyrics - it can bring up the lyrics to most tracks... every song is now karaoke!

i was really dissapointed by M$ on this front with the 360
i thought they might have used XBMC as a template for media functionality in the 360 and it could have handled HD

Same here - they still have time to redeem themselves though! Open software etc etc... fingers crossed. There's also a linux port being worked on so PS3 might be the way forward... XBMCHD with BluRay? Yes please :)

Streaming is much nicer, I agree. I've not opened the drive tray since I got the softmod loaded!! I just plugged the box into my LAN (I had a satellite hub in that corner of the room already) and added a video source smb://nas2/public/ .. doddle.

The lack of HD is an issue, but having got mine for free I can't complain. I sprung for a component cable and I've got it upscaling to 720p (max physical res of the TV anyway) which gives a nice picture. Now I've used xbmc I might investigate the linux port, but I don't really want to put another PC in the front room - already got a small one hidden under the cabinet in the corner (running asterisk) but that's not powerful enough to play videos, and replacing it isn't an option at the moment due to the extra cost of small yet powerful, and quiet, machines!

Another option is DVD-RW which work well for me.

I have the Xbox hardwired to the router but it is located ideally for this. I stream from my PC wirelessly via my Netgear DG834N. Works very well.
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!
