This may be quite important for anyone with a very early console! Sorry about the newsround link, it was the one I happened to have left open, but there are plenty of others. :D

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_4270000/newsid_4274600/4274603.stm

Bored earlier, so I was searching ebay to see what accessories there were for Xboxes, and came across something called a 'protection lead'. The auction didn't really explain what it was for, so I googled, and found that Microsoft had recalled a load of power cables from pre 2003/4 consoles (full details of exactly which are in the above link).

Mine is a 2002 model, so well within the timeframe for a possibly faulty lead. As I had no way of telling if the previous owner had exchanged it, I decided to ring and check. Luckily Xbox help is a freephone number, as it took me around two hours to get a straight answer!

At first they kept telling me if it worked ok there was no problem, to which I pointed out that they all had worked ok till they caught fire! The first person I spoke to just kept saying 'I assure you it'll be fine', which I asked him to put in writing to my email (he didn't of course :D ). Eventually I asked for a supervisor, at which point I was left on hold for over half an hour. I hung up, redialled, explained it all again, and after 5 minutes (and another 'is it working' conversation), the second person said he couldn't see any sign of a replacement being requested for my serial number, and will be sending me a new cable. Hopefully it is the right one, as he seemed a bit unsure what he was ordering.

I thought I'd better post this on here, as part of the advice till the new lead arrives is to turn the console off whenever you are not using it, and of course anyone using it as a media player will be leaving it on for long periods of time.
  • With regards to getting the save game files onto the xbox, am I correct in saying you get either:

A proper Xbox Memory Card, then get either an Xploder cable or an action replay.

    OR

Get a compatible memory stick, then find/build an adaptor cable.

Are the Action replay and Xploder just basically adaptors then?

Thanks for the information but the article you linked to doesn't say anything caught fire. It mentioned that some person/people had been burned and some carpets were scorched. Still important, but not a fire. Maybe the fires were mentioned in one of the other articles you were reading:confused:

One of the articles I googled was about an American family who had missed the recall, their house caught fire and their daughter was seriously injured, they were convinced enough it was the Xbox to launch a lawsuit.

There weren't a massive number of cases, but when the replacement is free, would you take the risk? I certainly wouldn't, which is why I spent two hours on the phone finding out if I had a new or old cable.

I didn't use any of these methods. I had an XBOX to USB cable - it lets you use XBOX controllers on your PC. I got it off eBay a while ago but I think some video game stores may sell it. I then plugged the XBOX controller into my PC, installed the Action Replay software, plugged the memory card into the controller, and moved the files across. I used a genuine Microsoft XBOX memory card for this, I heard some third party cards might not work.

the cable was a botch fix.it had lugs to cut down movement on the power connector.
the real issue was wear on the 2 soldered connectors on the psu board

Is that the board within the cut out module within the lead or the PSU within the Xbox itself?

    Hi all,
I think people modding their xbox should maybe have the discussion elsewhere and leave this thread for how to buy one for £20 maybe.

I have just found this thread where we could talk.

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=7743577#post7743577

I have modded the box (using Action Replay/Splinter Cell) so will happliy help with questions on that.
I myself have questions I need help for.
    E.g.
    - I can't get the box to see MP3's on a DVD-R I burnt.
    - My xbmc looks washed out (mostly greys). It visualises in colour and album artwork is fine but I can't believe the skin is spost to look like this.
    - I'd like it to boot-up into xbmc (I have seen how to do this but when I came again to try and find it I can't).

    Cheers
