Does that work if you loaded a cd into xbox.. or cd ripped to nas drive? I have never been able to work out how to get album art working. While I breathe.... I hope0 -
When I went to my local gamestation they had no xbox accessories at all.
They just had a few PS2 controllers and memory cards in with all the preowned stuff. Do they keep any xbox stuff behind the counter? It would be quite nice if I could get the remote for £2!
I phoned to check whether they had any memory cards in stock and he said he would put one away for me (which he did). When I went to pick it up I asked if he had any IR remote kits and he checked out back and came back with one (£2.99). So I would ask the staff as they probably aren't on display0 -

Not tried a CD.
Part of a MP3 rip is fetching the album art. Or you can fetch them yourself and even make them as jpg's and attach them via Windows Media Player, 3rd party s/w or just copy the jpg where the mp3's are.Girls are gonna love the way I toss my hair. Boys are gonna hate the way I seem.

arrrghhhhhhh.... was waiting til tomorrow to go see if they had any non crystal ones back in stock, now their website seems to suggest the sale's over  and they didnt bother replying to my email asking when it ended...
well, £10 more ain't so bad... just makes you hate high street stores even more though  they dont display stuff, they dont let you check things out, they dont make sure things work, they dont tell you when things start n end... why do they still exist? and why do i still bother with em...
on the bright side i just got a VGA to Scart cable soldered up so i don't really need an xbox frontend for stuff... so long as i can figure out why the image is being so jittery...0 -
ok, popped in to game today and the sale was still on (dont expect it to last long though). asked about black xboxes and they had some, though only one they wanted to sell me (obviously, a 1.6 version, go figure...). after a nice conversation with one of the sales guys, which among other things included the intricacies of scart cabling
(me: any with a scart cable? him: this one has one. me: no, that's a composite to scart converter. him: they're all the same thing. me: no, i want one that does RGB(s) signaling, not composite over scart. him: they're all the same thing. me: erm... ok.) i didn't have the heart to tell him i'd spent the last 48 hours soldering together custom scart cables (vga >rgbs) and full well knew the functioning of every single pin and every single video mode that can be carried across one...
anyway, basically he told me he was testing a load to make sure they worked (how much difference it makes i dunno, what with the rest of you getting non-functioning ones, and by a guy who doesn't know the difference between various video signals i'm not sure how much this "testing" entails), wouldn't sell me one untested and told me to go back around 3. and so i await... no doubt i'll get there to find either he's not tested any, gone home, no pre 1.6 available, or the sale's ended....
the guy also seemed to know why i wanted a pre 1.6, though i dare say not so much about software mods (him: you wanna chip it. me: well, not chip (illegal), but still mod (legal)... him: its the same thing. me: it's... this is gonna go the same way as the scart thing ain't it? :rotfl: )
but i did get Splinter Cell original for 99p from gamestation, and they have a remote for £1.99 just incase i need it...
EDIT: suprise suprise, no pre 1.6s. Still, I picked up a 2005 one for £20 before the sale ended (which at first rang up at about £129.99, que nervous looks from cashier). Anyway, if someone wants to do a straight swap for it for a pre 1.6, or wants to buy it outright once i've got it modded and got a pre 1.6 elsewhere then fine.
And fwiw, the guy in the shop said they get about 1 or 2 pre-owned ones in a week, and by the looks of it they get them all tested around saturday for sale on sunday (someone else mentioned saturday here too). So I'll be going back in a couple weeks to check em out again.0 -
to save me looking through all 18 pages, why is it important to get a pre 1.6 XBox, did MS fix something on later versions?
Ta.0 -
its not important.
if all you want ot do is softmod then it makes little difference to you.
if your hard modding it involves extra soldering rebuilding the LPC port connections and different bios.
plus a small issue with a resistor sometimes popping on boards when you solder0 -
>> why is it important to get a pre 1.6 XBox,
really only because of overscan alterations that can't be made on the 1.6 xcalibur chip. that and maybe the odd one or two things but i'm yet to see what else doesn't work...
NOTE: unless you're planning on ever installing a full linux distro then you can ignore anything about overscan/video support in the below. XBMC and other dashboards function identically on 1.6s and non-1.6s (other than temp readings) so it's just dvd/psu/noise stuff you may wish to be concerned about.
And please read this: http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196390
If you're never going to run a Linux OS and you use an RGB Scart (RGBs) cable for connection you could well be better off with a 1.6 due to poor implementation of RGB signaling in pre-1.6s.

HOWTO FIND YOUR VERSION:
http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO
and fwiw, version high(or low)lights include:
1.0: a second, 40mm fan for gpu, may add a bit more noise. the whole heatsink can be replaced with a bigger fanless one if you so wish, but that's more moneys unless you have everything already: http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-scene/tutorials/Turning_the_v1.0_xbox_silent.pdf
and they also are 100% likely to come with a thomson dvd drive, one of the lesser favoured due to media compatibility and reliability. also comes with the prefered connexant video chip (continuing up to & inc 1.3).
biggest problem is it usually comes with a foxlink (revision A) psu prone to poor soldering on the socket connection, which can cause problems ranging from intermittent power loss to fire. see http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=361537 for explanation, and see http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox%20power%20supply%20repair%20tutorial.htm how to find and fix the problem. there's a chance it uses a Mineba or Rev B foxlink which have measures to prevent the problem.
1.1: no extra fan (+), posibility of a better thomson drive, see http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Linux_Boot_CD/DVD_Burning_HOWTO ) (+), prone to the same psu problems as 1.0 (-)..
1.2: same as 1.1 but no longer prone to the same psu problems as they're shipped with a different psu model (Rev. B Foxlink or Delta PSUs are fine). although the same problem could technically affect any psu (poor solder joints on the power socket), newer models have much improved connections to hold the socket and power cable in place. likely to come with a prefered philips dvd drive.
1.3: same as 1.2 except more likely to come with a samsung drive (has most probs reading media but depending on drive model can read most if correct bitset used: http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Linux_Boot_CD/DVD_Burning_HOWTO)
1.4: now come with a focus video chip, not so highly regarded as the connexant one mainly due to lack of vga rgb support (so only a problem if you're handy with a soldering iron - http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_VGA_HOWTO ). otherwise much as the previous model.
1.5: a slight enigma, with people claiming it doesn't exist. it's actually a 1.4 with a small difference in some of the pcb traces; apparently either a mod prevention technique or a manufacturing fault and production reverted to 1.4 or 1.6s before many 1.5s were made. basically... it's a 1.4 and you're very unlikely to have one (though if you have a crystal model it's your only chance of getting a non 1.6 one).
1.6(a/b): oh boy. eeprom is no longer e (if that don't make sense to you it's not a problem), temp sensors are in different locations on chips meaning unreliable temp reporting by mod software, ram *may* be impossible to upgrade, and the video chip is a custom made xcalibur which has a lot less support from unofficial programs, notably the nvtv driver tool in linux which basically means no overscan adjustments that crt owners may want. and it's the version least people have with least development done on it (which is one for those of you paranoid about community support, without which you wouldn't be reading any of this anyway cos modding would barely exist).
on the plus side you're more likely to get a prefered hitachi-lg dvd drive included which can be physically modded to enable cd-r compatibility, on a par with the philips).
update: well i figured there'd be more... as i've just found out first hand, the 1.6 has vastly less support for usb devices used to softmod than previous versions. of 11 i've tried, not one worked. a number of places say *no* usb devices work in the MS dasboard on 1.6 though this isn't quite true as a few people have had better luck with theirs.
all in all, only slight differences, but if you dislike noise and can't mod, avoid 1.0s. if you're unwilling or unable to solder the psu fix, avoid 1.0s and 1.1s. if you want overscan corrections, avoid 1.6. if you want to connect it to a vga monitor with custom cable, avoid 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6s. and if you want my moneysavingexpert best bang for the buck choice, find a 1.3 or 1.2 (or .1 if you don't mind soldering power sockets). but don't get paranoid about it like i am
>> did MS fix something on later versions?
only for themselves :rotfl:0 -
Can you simply swap your DVD drive for any oem one? I have a couple of old ones that I swapped for writers and would like to replace the Thomson one so it will read more disks?0
