As the thread suggested by Gilette 147 was for Xbox 360 I have started a new one here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=7751765#post7751765

Hopefully we can continue the discussion there and won't upset anyone else

Managed to nab one of these in Game in Farnborough. Turned it on today and I'm presented with a screen where it seems I'm supposed to set the time and date. However, nothing happens no matter what buttons I press on the controller. Any one else had this problem? Should I just assume it's a dud controller and get game to replace it? Is there any way of verifying this...like should there be a light on the controller when its turned on or anything? Really can't be bothered lugging the whole xbox back to the store if i can avoid it!

Could be a dud controller although there aren't any lights. Try all the input ports just to make sure it isn't a faulty port. I would still however consider taking box with your controller just in case there is a motherboard fault (might save a second journey).

the cable was a botch fix.it had lugs to cut down movement on the power connector.
the real issue was wear on the 2 soldered connectors on the psu board

I did read it was a botch as it was cheaper than bringing all the consoles in. Important thing though is my new cable has a great big trip switch in it with a test and reset button, so hopefully will keep any problems isolated in the console. Arrived just now so I haven't tried it of course, amazingly quick delivery though! :D

could it be related to the clock loop problem? http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Clock_Loop_Problem_HOWTO maybe someone tried to mod it unsuccesfully... doesn't say much for game's quality control either way

AFAIK The newer Exploits e.g. Ndure don't suffer from this problem. I think they work by sound files rather than fonts.

The XBox doesn't have a CMOS battery like a PC and uses a capacitor to store charge to run the clock. It if is unplugged for more than 18 hours the clock will reset.

Panic over, took the controller in today for a replacement, just tried it out and it works fine. Just got to wait for my Action Replay to arrive and I can start trying to get XBMC on to it!

gamestation are selling pre-owned xbox remotes for £2

When I went to my local gamestation they had no xbox accessories at all.
They just had a few PS2 controllers and memory cards in with all the preowned stuff. Do they keep any xbox stuff behind the counter? It would be quite nice if I could get the remote for £2!

In Coventry Gamestation they had a number of pre-owned remotes for 1.99 They were in a locked display case to the right of the main counter. I bought one but there were others.
