I picked up one of the crystal xbox's which I understand is one of the most recent 1.6 versions and the softmod has worked fine for me.

  • >> I have been trying to connect Xbox to drive but my settings must be wrong.

would that be something to do with fatx formatting? apparently the thing only recognizes drives with a fat-x file system but it should format them to this once connected...

    FIND YOUR XBOX VERSION

    http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Versions_HOWTO

there's a white sticker on the back of the xbox (which may or may not match up with stickers on preowned cases) which should contain a date then two serial numbers. if the date says 2003 you don't gotta do anything else, otherwise check the first 3 digits of the last 5 digits of the two serial numbers, will be in format YearWeekWeek eg 411XX (2004 week 11). any made on or before the 11th week of 2004 should be 1.4's, 12th week only from lines 3, 4 and 5 and everything after should be 1.6 (including all crystals, though a very very small number may be 1.5s). check the link for determining more from the serial number. and the only version with problems is 1.6(a,b,c...) as it contains completely different hardware/chips than previous versions.

    MODDING 1.6s

this IS deffinately possible. info regarding xebian refers to a MechInstaller mod. this may or may not be only possible on pre 1.6s, but there's two other games (splinter cell, agent under fire) which can deffinately be used to mod 1.6s. see: http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/softmod/20179-softmod-krayzie-s-ndure-installer-1-1-1-a.html
the problems with 1.6 are mostly the lack of support for them coming from the differing hardware, so you may have trouble getting one or two things working (such as overscan support) but most things will still work to some degree. also any hardware mods will need to be different to support differing hardware, so things like mod chips need to be specifficaly 1.6(a/b/c) compatible.

QUICK & EASY MONEY MAKING XBOX SCHEME

If you live near a CeX shop ( www.cex.co.uk ) and a game store selling crystal xboxs (mostly all of them unfortunately), just buy a crystal for 19.98, walk down the street, in to CeX and sell it to them for £22 cash. do this a few times and right annoy them :)
    http://www.cex.co.uk/search.php?ispostback=1&cat=672&section=1&pl=39

seriously though, the above may be a very good way of getting a deffinate pre 1.6 xbox. I've not tried it myself but if you did have a 1.6 crystal from game, CeX may be prepared to swap it for an unboxed pre 1.6 xbox seeings how they sell the crystal for more than the regular older one. if not, you can still sell the crystal for £22, making £2, then buy a pre 1.6 for £30 (£28 after money made). it's cheaper and quicker than waiting a month for game to have some pre 1.6s back in stock and paying £29.99 for them. though you may just wanna check it all works / steal any packaged remotes/scart cables before handing it over to cex.

SLOW & HARD MONEY MAKING XBOX SCHEME

ok maybe not so hard but... they're all going for around £50 (shipped) on ebay. need i say more?

Just starting to assemble all the stuff I need, ordered a usb cable and a usb key that is hopefully compatible, got splinter cell and the two game exploits needed ... and was wondering if anyone can recommend a particular version of XBMC that they are using? When I searched, there were loads of them!

Thanks, that seems to be the one I found too, though not the same place, least the filename is the same. One of the tutorials I read recommended looking for torrents of it, but that was a bad idea and got me very confused! :D
  • Hi to all those who have done this! I've got evolution x up and running and am connected with my pc and ready to ftp xbmc over. It says to put the files in E\Dashboard or Apps, but thee isn't any folders named as those. I put the xbmc files into the E directory but they don't appear under the Applications menu on the xbox? Help! So close to finishing this after faffing around all night!

    I went the SID.Splinter.Cell route!

the first thing I noticed, my god, it sounds like an asthmatic smoker, how can that be a media centre, you'd need a TV at full blast to cover the sound of the fan/HD

Mine's the same. If you're intending to run XBMC you can use that to turn down the fan speed. It's just about acceptable now but I believe you can get it to run virtually silently if you're willing to open the case and change the fan(s).
