well... 1.6's are a little bit more than just "newer". they can be softmoded just as easily, though the similarities hardware wise kinda end there. the tsop bios chip in 1.6 is eprom not eeprom so can't be flashed directly if you so wanted to, although i think you can still hardware mod the bios (needed for hd upgrading)..

Never had to do anything like that when upgrading my HDD. Applied soft MOD. Took out HDD and used tools that came with the mod to set up new HDD and clone old XBOX one. unlocked the old drive and got EEPROM code then used code to lock new HDD. connected it to xbox and reapplied SOFT MOD and everything was fine... No hardware issues at all and the quality on my CRT was excellent although I now have a plasma.

Finally made it back to the Macclesfield store today (without the massive queues this time, hurrah!). They'd got a pre-owned Xbox, but when it scanned it came up at 29.98, so when I said 'Oh I thought it was 19.98' the assistant just said perhaps that offer had expired. Anyone know if that is the case?

Was quite annoying as it had the S-Whatever cable to SCART included, plus they had PGR2 for 98p! Still a bit unsure about buying one though, I won't have any problems using it to play games or watch DVDs on a 12" portable (there is a SCART socket) will I? (Can't you tell I've never owned a console before :D )

For anyone going down the XBMC route I'd highly recommend a DVD remote (try ebay) plus a small mod which allows you to power the XBOX on and off from the remote.

The one I use is called "XIR Easy" which takes about 10 minutes to install and no soldering is required. I have them on each of my 4 XBMC boxes.

Be careful of buying these remotes on ebay. The prices are good but most of the Hong Kong/China sellers do clone remotes. They are very poor quality although they look exactly the same.

Agreed. Buy a 2nd hand but genuine MS remote in preference to a clone. My last one was 6 quid from ebay.

To those who have upgraded the xbox with a new HDD, I have two questions for you:

    1. I followed the instructions on how to upgrade HDD. Once I made the cdr with all the correct files, ie key.bin, c, e, I put the disc in, booted the pc, selected option 1, it then partitioned the hdd, formatted, copied across the C and E. After that when I typed reboot, I get the following message which keeps on repeating itself for ever: " i2c is resetting...", and it never reboots, just frozen.

    2. I cannot boot up with option "3" - boot up linux with locking and unlocking utilities. When I selct this option my comuter just freezes.

Can anyone help me with these issues? Thanks

    Hi,
I am nervous about changing the HDD so I have bought a NAS drive for my home network. I thought this would be useful in other ways too.

I bought Splinter Cell for 49p from Amazon (used) and have a Action Replay thingy coming from ebay. If I like the softmod I will buy a remote (or even another xbox with remote) from ebay.

    Also
I am being lazy and can probably find out later myself but.....
I am playing with mediaPortal at the moment to see if it can replace my Topfield which has just died for my TV recording.
Can the files made by mediaPortal be played by the modded xbox? Because if so then I would be able to watch recorded TV anywhere I put a modded Xbox. The problem with HD Recorders over old fashioned video recorders is that you can't take a program upstairs and finish watching it in bed.

  • what format are mediaportal recordings in? iirc they're .ts and that's just a wrapper for MPEG2, so if you set them to auto transcode to MPG files you'd be able to watch them fine on xbox; or it might even play the original .ts files if you're lucky.

    actually... http://wiki.team-mediaportal.com/TV-Engine_0.3/config-Recording
by the looks of it you might have a choice between mpeg or ts recordings...

I'm at work so can't look, but I'm pretty sure that that 4th tab (with the recording format choice) doesn't appear on my version.
I will look tonite and thanks.

I looked at a file lastnite to see what it was and it didn't have .m**
