In the light of the above knowledge, I will have to see if it is worth selling my gear....I have 2 softmodded xbox's now. I thought it was possible to image the modded xbox hard drive so should not need the mod kit, but I will have to look into this so the offer of my gear is on hold for the time being.:(
I cloned my hard drive when I changed it. When it was put into the XBOX the mod had to be reinstalled in order to get it to work again.. It seems to be the way it always happens.. I have just put my modding kit away in a drawer for future use just in case.0 -
picked one up in Bournemouth, controller doesn't work so that put an end to any further playing tonight but the first thing I noticed, my god, it sounds like an asthmatic smoker, how can that be a media centre, you'd need a TV at full blast to cover the sound of the fan/HD0

If you're comfortable with it, take the lid off and stick your finger in the fan (carefully, the PSU is open and nearby!!!!) to see if it's that that is making the noise. If so, quite trivial to replace.
Alternatively take it back as faulty - they really are very quiet (although mine aren't quite as quiet as sco0ter suggests!)0 -

My drive was brand new when it went in and cannot be heard at all so all I get is a very slight fan noise so is around as loud as my SKY+0 -
I'll try taking it back, I can hear the Humax fan which classes at about 40dB but this Xbox one is way over and above that and would be intrusive to use as a media player, for game playing I could expect the noise. I'll have a furthe rcheck in case there is a build up of dirt but if the replacement isn't much better I may have to loook for an alternative solution0

watch out for V1.0 xboxes as these have a 2nd internal fan and are a good bit noisier than later versions.
however the good thing is you can do a tsop flash on these(bit like a chip with no chip) but thats another story altogether0 -
For anyone going down the XBMC route I'd highly recommend a DVD remote (try ebay) plus a small mod which allows you to power the XBOX on and off from the remote.
The one I use is called "XIR Easy" which takes about 10 minutes to install and no soldering is required. I have them on each of my 4 XBMC boxes.0 -
>> and it uses the exact same method, all it means is your 1.6 xbox is newer, so in
>> theory should last longer.
well... 1.6's are a little bit more than just "newer". they can be softmoded just as easily, though the similarities hardware wise kinda end there. the tsop bios chip in 1.6 is eprom not eeprom so can't be flashed directly if you so wanted to, although i think you can still hardware mod the bios (needed for hd upgrading).
then the other chip differences seem to have caused headaches for lots of people in terms of coding; the xcalibur video chip having little support in terms of programming documentation from MS and people who know how to code for it. most of the major problems are detailed here: http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_v1.6_Issues
various things don't work on it such as overscan support (which is important if you're hooking up to a crt). there are workarounds but these involve converting the image resolution which the affects overall quality. then there's a number of other guides for things that only work on the focus or connexant chips specifically and not on xcalibur, like this handy square pixel guide: http://glotv.dax.nu/xbox/focus-setup.html
other differences are smaller such as temp sensors being in different places, yet another small yet inconvinient problem: http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19143
all basically meaning the pre-1.6 boxes are much more flexible for programmers and users to work with, and therefore there's more guides, programs, mods, support and users for earlier versions than there are for 1.6. which is why, given the choice, i'd rather not have a 1.6 :money:but yeah, if you just wanna play xbox games, softmod and have a bit of fun running various custom stuff and aren't too bothered about optimal functionality then 1.6 seems fine.0 -
as said i wouldnt get to bogged down in version numbers.
get an xbox, get it modded and use it.
if later for any reason you decide you need an earlier model for whatever reason then there only going to get cheaper or at least not more expensive0
