I think v1.6 were harder to hardware mod as they made some significant changes. AFAIK the software mod works on any model.

you have myth frontend on it? what's overscan support like? and general graphics support / linux behaviour?

1.6 from what i've read has a different video chip (xcalibur) with little support for it, and apparently only composite or svideo out @ 640x480 with no overscan support (one of my reasons for an xbox is i'm too lazy to solder up a vga to scart rgbs cable for my pc, i want an easy scart rgbs output with decent overscan / general output config via xorg.conf). it also has a different flash bios chip (eprom, not ee) which does something weird for modding but the ndure mod seems alright with it.

and then there's this guy who really doesn't like the shape of linux on 1.6s: http://web.ivy.net/~carton/rant/gentoox/xbox16.html

but it's all so old i can't really tell what's still important. all i know is, if i have the choice, i'd rather go with what the majority of guides are recommending. at least if something goes wrong there'll be plenty more places to look for help.

you got a 1.6. seems pretty straight forward to do a basic mod following this guide:
    http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/softmod/20179-softmod-krayzie-s-ndure-installer-1-1-1-a.html

but that's with an action replay. you can use a usb stick instead, but it has to be formatted with fat-x (and not all of them will work with it so ymmv). search google for guides. you'd also need an xbox > usb female adapter (~£7 on ebay) to connect it up, which you can use to connect various mice and keyboards too if needs be.

    .

Dont have a clue what you are on about.....

The software I used came with all instructions and software including XBMC and instructions on how to install a larger HDD on video. There is another version that has instructions in PDF.

All I know is I can stream videos from my PC to my 42" samsung and its as good as the picture on my Inbuilt freeview (Might be something to do with a high definition patch in the program). Just streaming straight from web is not so good but then thats the quality of stream and nothing to do with the XBOX

BTW The one I used was done specifically for the 1.6

I have one of the Argos Xbox's bought last year and it's a 1.6. I haven't got around to modding yet partly because I couldn't get my head around what to do and there's a lot of conflicting info here and elsewhere.

I am in the process of getting all the bits together. I now have Splinter Cell (Classics) which contrary to what has been said does seem to work, an Xploder and am waiting for a memory card before I go ahead. I think I know where I am then I read you can't/easily mod 1.6's.

I have since found this http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/article1631.html which says otherwise, the guy seems to have written it specifically for the 1.6.

sco0ter - Do you know if this is what you used or Krayzie's or other, would be interested to know, cheers.

I had a 1.6 from Argos last year as well when they were selling them for £50.

No problem softmodding them with Krayzies Ndure exploit.

Th eonly problem is that MS changed a bit of the hardware (video) and the 1.6 is not as flexible as earlier console versions.
  • To those who are selling their mod kits - I would recommend you keep them. You never know when you are going to need it again.
I modded my Argos deal 1.6 soon after buying (a newbie at the time), installed a bigger HD and XBMC. I also changed the bootfile to load the XBMC up straightaway rather than the softmod menu screen.

Then when I placed a 'Revenge of the Sith' movie DVD into the drive, some software tried to install itself and ending up screwing up the mod. Bootup then went back to the green Microsoft options, rather than the softmod, unless i placed a DVD in the tray. So I whacked Splinter Cell back in to re-load the mod.

To mod, I re-wrote a flash driver to recognise it as an xbox action replay, in order to get the savegames onto it.
  • does anyone know if game regularly get new preowned xboxes in stock? and how long the £20 offer will last? is it just til current stocks run out? or the whole of the jan sale? in which case, when does the jan sale end (a seemingly obvious yet probably more complex question)? i'm just hoping that i may be able to pick one up later in the month from one of the three stores that currently have none or only 1.6 boxes available.
  • 1.6 Xbox's are softmodded the same as any others!

Ok, to cut all the crap.

Any method whether it be hot swapping(I don't recommend) or using the game save exploit, is a soft mod.

A hardmod is when you install a mod chip.

1.6 Xbox's can be softmodded just as easily as any other xbox, and it uses the exact same method, all it means is your 1.6 xbox is newer, so in theory should last longer.

1.6 Xbox's are softmodded the same as any others!

In the light of the above knowledge, I will have to see if it is worth selling my gear....I have 2 softmodded xbox's now. I thought it was possible to image the modded xbox hard drive so should not need the mod kit, but I will have to look into this so the offer of my gear is on hold for the time being.:(
