Thanks againI would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Ramada/Days Inn BRG thread.0 -
I think im going to have a go at Hot Swapping for the softmod. It seems the quickest way and not too complicated,
Can someone link to a decent guide on how to do it as i have have looked at a couple but none are too informative.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -
Dear agony aunts....
I have a 1.6 and I'm confused.
I bought an Xbox and I was offered 2 and the shiny crystal one looked newer and attracted my attention. Is there any difference between the two I asked the sales assistant and he said, it's newer. He did not say it's a 1.6 be afraid be very afraid.
So I bought my copy of Splinter Cell and was about to give the game controller a hard mod to combine it with an ordinary USB lead to create a connection (and then connect the end of the standard USB cable to the game controller.)
BUT then I hear it's a 1.6. Now I all wanted to use it for was for XBMC though having a Linux possessed Xbox sounded great. Go on Xbox be free!!! (oh dear!).
So do I conclude that my 1.6 is a bit of a dud, and since I asked if it was the same as the comparatively ugly looking old Xbox and it was not, and take it back.
I have an LCD television so does it matter about overscan. If I thought I could swap it I would, but I suspect there won't be another to swap it with, or that will be another 1.6. However Linux appears like it will not work, and XBMC looks like it will have problems.
What do you think I should do?
I realise a 1.6 is not ideal, but I'm not sure how much of a problem it is.0 -
1.6 can be a pain with a modchip. Softmod works on all versions.0

How can you tell whether you have a 1.6 or not
Sorry if this is a stupid question.0 -
1.6 can be a pain with a modchip. Softmod works on all versions.
says:
Is your Xbox compatible?
The Software Method takes advantage of a flaw in the Microsoft dashboard to make your Xbox Linux-compatible. Unfortunately this flaw has been fixed in newer versions of the dashboard. A Dashboard version of 4920 or below is required.- If your Dashboard version is greater than 4920 and your kernel version less than 5713 then it is possible to downgrade your Microsoft Dashboard to 4920.
- If your kernel version is 5713 or later, then it is not possible to downgrade to a 4920 dashboard, and you will be unable to use the Software Method. ALL 1.6 Xboxes (see Versions HOWTO to determine the version number of your Xbox) have >=5713 kernels, and so cannot be made Linux compatibile using the Software Method.

I think we all need confirmation of the above before anyone else buys an xbox (or more importantly the Action Replay etc).
Reading the links above it reads like we need to get quite an old xbox before you know you are safe. And the shops all make a point of trying to give you the newest box they have. Nice of them but potentially disasterous to us.
I don't mind if I end up with an xbox which is just an xbox. It's still a great scoop. But the £20 I have spent on bits for the mod may be wasted money.Girls are gonna love the way I toss my hair. Boys are gonna hate the way I seem.
I would rather drown with you than watch the surf with someone else0 -
The guide I followed suggests that you upgrade to the latest dashboard (5960) before doing the softmod which contradicts the advice in the wiki. See http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/softmod/5484-microsoft-dashboard-details-softmodding.html
and
http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/softmod/20179-softmod-krayzie-s-ndure-installer-1-1-1-a.html
for the tutorial I followed.
Happy to assist anyone in North-Notts area with with getting the softmod working and xbmc running. It is awesome and for £20 an uber bargain.0 -
Please bear in mind there's a lot of information from 2004/2005 perhaps the peak of the xbox scene that hasn't been updated Krayzie's Ndure is one of the most recent soft mods and resolves a lot of issues, but needs a new tutorial imo. Krayzie's mod was Live friendly which is part of why you needed the latest dashboard.zolablue25 wrote: »How can you tell whether you have a 1.6 or not
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Post mod you can find much more specific hardware info in the replacement dashboard/s. The serial number method worked ok for me as I assumed it was a v1.1 and that's what it turned out to be.
Have to say at the moment I'm finding out something new about XBMC everyday amazingly polished and full featured.
Some of its best features so far imo aside from the myriad of controls and options are playing xvid+vobsubs from within multipart rar files (slight pause as the subs are parsed), bookmarking with thumbnails.
Playing MS's proprietary dvr-ms files from recordings made by Windows Media Center this is only beta support, but its good enough for me once deinterlace is selected.
Phenomenal amount of visualisations to accompany music and when played from a CD. It appears to cache the track names once retrieved from CDDB off the net.
Local weather off the net shame its not sourced from accuweather, browsing & watching Apple trailers with options to save to disc.0
