Supermarket End Of Day Reductions

  • I was in Asda about 6pm the other day, near the meat counter, when the lad turned up with the price gun to reduce prices further, not that there was much left on the Whoops counter.
When out of nowhere 6 women appeared, with baskets and trollies full of "whoops"items from all over the store, veg, cream cakes, bread, not just stuff from the meat counter.
They stood in a not so orderly line and handed over every item for him to reduce further.
While this was going on another woman turned up with an empty trolly and just put everything left on the whoops counter into it. I don't think she even looked at what she was grabbing. Then she joined the queue for further reductions.
The look I got from the lad, when I handed over my one item, spoke volumes and it definitely explained why the whoops counter is often empty.

My Asda is unfortunately placed .... on the largest roundabout in Europe (I am informed by another MSEer). This means I have a mental block to go there as Tesco is nearer.

The question is always: do I really want to drive twice as far to Asda, knowing that when I come out I have to go AAAALLLLLLL the way round that roundabout and its never-ending series of traffic lights (not counted yet, but there is a set at every joining point!). I usually decide "nope".
  • on a busy night though you need a bodyguard as seeing is believing the lengths some go to, to get to the front next to the reducer to grab what they can :D[/quote]

Body armour required at our local asda its the staff i feel sorry for it was been snatched of him.We couldn't get to the fridge to look at reductions for a silly old bat who was taking everything and followed them round the store as they reduced lady next to me took a chicken out of her trolley and walked off :rotfl: .
Our local asda is 24 hours and reductions are usually around 7pm
  • I remember waiting for this lady to come back with a curry that was going to be reduced, and then some horrible woman just snatched it as she was handing it to me. I explained I'd been waiting for it and she just gave me a dirty look and walked off. I don't like all the staking out the chiller cabinets and just taking things out of peoples' hands/trolleys/baskets. Someone walked off with my basket last time. I had a guinea fowl in it.

Having said that, I got 5kg of potatoes for 10p at Tesco the other evening. :D
  • loving reading others experiences .. thank you

had a pleasant shop last night and bagged a few end of day items as well ... for some reason there were not many bargain hunters [ or grabbers ] around :D

regarding the repricing, they are not being fair to the reducers as it is common knowledge once you have placed an item in your basket you are happy to pay the price.

one of our reducers refuses point blank and another does it just to get the person/s out of the way so they can finish doing their job ... but they are taking a risk doing it

    happy bargain hunting guys :j
  • I went to a different Tesco this evening; one where I've had some good bits and bobs before but today all there was, in ALL areas was a litre of milk, 2 chicken ready meals, a pork pie, a pack of sliced ham and a pack of sausages. I got the sausages. :D
  • I don't find there's any type....students, old people, families and even Tesco staff; I saw a lady in her uniform but obviously off-duty, getting stuck in with the rest of us.

Tesco and Asda are great for reductions; the Sainsburys nearest me isn't so great for reductions; they only knock about 50p off some things.
  • New asda just down from me has great reductions! And the reduction man was a gem, i was looking a non reduced veg when he came up and said ' i'm going to reduce all of that to 10p so give me the stuff you want and i'll do it now.' Got 3 big bags of apples, 2 bags of carrots and some organic potatoes for 60p:D
Much better than Mr T who takes about 20p off the price:rolleyes:

I often find it is the Asian and Chinese people who are the worst and take loads and loads of stuff depriving the rest of us.

I know they often have big families but they often are quite braze, rude and impolite about it.

yes, I agree and often doubt it's because they have large families - some must surely be buying for a restaurant or take away business. A case in point was one day I happened to be there at mega markdown time in the veg section when I noticed a Chinese couple going about it like a military operation!

Between them they grabbed 15 iceberg lettuces at 5p, all the reduced tomoatoes (about 10 of them at 10p a pack), and I lost count of the number of whole cucumbers they grabbed between them! Even the largest of families couldn't eat all that fresh stuff before it went off and they're not freezable items either

Their trolley was already groaning under the weight of items with yellow labels anyway. They were really aggressive and pushy as well, and constantly interrupting the poor member of staff who was trying to mark down by thrusting items into his face asking for it to be reduced further. Nobody else could get a look in. IMO these sort of 'bargain hunters' should be restricted to number of items or told to go and shop at a trade wholesalers like they really should

I questioned this and apparently there is no limit ........ they just want it gone

I miss out on loads as I dont and wont push in and grab ...... if its there within easy reach I pick it up if it isnt I walk on

one of the regular grabbers did get warned though as he was filling his boxes and trolly with mega loads [ he makes sure he is instore by 5 when the night reducer starts her shift and follows her everywhere till she has finished reducing everything] and not going to checkout till the very last minuet

The yellow tickets are sometimes a pain and have to be manually punched in, thus resulting in the check out staff not being finished by closing time so between them they complained about him

he is also a regular visitor to CS when he has been overcharged by a 1p or two on his reductions

he never buys anything full price from Asda and does this about 3 or 4 nights a week
he is a retired gent, never married,no children and lives alone ....... what on earth he does with all he buys is a mystery ..... unless he is selling it on

some people are never satisfied are they :D
