It always amuses me seeing the people who go in and grab all the reduced stuff - more often than not seem to be middle aged women where I come from, and they are pretty militant about it. However, I can't help thinking that they buy more than they would otherwise buy just because they think they're getting better value... Plus half the food in their trolleys is ready meals, and to be honest they could cook a decent and nutritious meal for less if they put a bit of effort into it.

I pick up the odd thing if it's something I will use, but wouldn't dream of following round the poor person having to reduce the stuff in the hope of getting a bit more money off, and so do most people who actually take a bit of pride.

Trust someone to turn a discussion about groceries into a race issue...Give us all a break. You must have noticed that some people are mentioning old people - are they being ageist? When describing behaviour it is normal to describe the person involved, whether it is their weight, age or race etc. I have been to Tescos at night and seen foreigners (no idea where from, just not speaking English) waiting for items to be reduced. I assume that they are on a low wage or just not used to wasting money on luxury goods. Shoot me if that makes me racist.

Get off your high horse No Future and leave us to have a normal discussion without accusations.

I am not on a high horse or making accusations. I just pointed out that it wasn't relevant to the discussion to mention ethnicity.
  • you may find the usual allocated reduced areas are now being used for other things and any reductions are now on the shelf alongside the in date items.

my local store have changed back to this this week to free up space to load the christmas goodies in

keep your eyes peeled  for the yellow stickers :D
  • Where on earth do you find these?!

    I want some of theseeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Usually Asda Mon - Wed , with them closing at 8 anything left is done down to silly money in the last half hour sometimes still with an hour to go :D
The best II managed was a £1.29 onion bhaji etc selection reduced to 99p - and it was 8pm and they went off the next day... (it was a sat night 10pm closing)...

I am guessing this was Tesco , I dont find much there at all , sometimes have been in about 9 [ ours is 24 hour opening ]and found an odd item or two but most of the time there reductions are so little you are best paying full price to get the longer date
  • The best haul I have ever had at Asda was on fish. Absolutely loads of tuna steaks, cod fillets, haddock, plaice, you name it, all reduced to a symbolic 2p. Filled up the freezer for under a pound, and without the slightest qualms about it. I couldn't give a damn if someone thought some unsubstantiated rubbish along the lines of "oh look at this skint foreign type again..."

For this foreigner doesn't believe much in conspicuous consumption. He does, however, believe in a debt-free existence and that there is a correlation between that and one's consumer habits.

i am usually left to do reductions in the supermarket where i work (leading supermarket, i shalln't name names as they're likely to fire/suspend me) and it's always the same faces in getting the reduced items, not looking at what it is, just sweeping stuff into trolleys.

in little over a year, i've walked away from 6 fights, two which got bloody over reduced chicken.

my favourite bit though is seeing [usually the same] people making a beeline for me when i walk out from behind the counter with the gun & printer to do the final reductions, asking me to reduce their groceries down further that are already in their baskets. the answer? a firm no. they are clearly happy with the price they picked the item/s up at, so why should i knock it down further, thus affecting (albeit only fractionally) my bonus at the end of the year.

for example, a woman complained because i refused to knock down the 4 massive beef joints she had in her trolley down from 33p each (shelf price £8 each, give or take 20p).

but they do swarm round like flies round sh*te. they have stopped asking for items in their trolley to be reduced now as it's just a waste of breath.

    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

also, i don't want anyone trying to label me as to be standing up for a faceless corporation's profits instead of helping people out, but there's a line that has to be drawn between getting a bargain and taking the p*ss

  • Sorry to hear that you regularly encounter this venue of vultures kind of behaviour.
It's not like this at all in our local superstores (east coast). Here, all I've ever seen is people being polite to the employees and each other, politely giving the "reducer" ample space to do the job, and sharing their catch with other customers in a cooperative and friendly manner. Like this:

"Sorry, am I in your way?"
"Anybody else want any of these?"
"Would you pass me that cheese over there?" - "Of course. Here you are."
"Sorry, is it alright if I have one of those, too?" - "Yes, of course. How many? Half each ok?"
"Swop one of these for this one?" - "Here you go."
"Is it ok if I clear these out, or would you like some, too?"
    etc.

It's sad to hear it's not like this everywhere, and my sympathy is with the employees.

    .

OMG I have never seen a fight break out over reduced to clear yet. But it is a bit like a jumble sale elbows everywhere around here. Surprised you don't have a body guard.

In my local, the manager does not allow everything to be reduced down as much as it was it was. So no pack of two danish pastries for 20p:mad::rotfl:need to loose weight anyway.

It does not worry me and reduced to clear does allow me to get some nice bits and pieces like melons for 10p.

Each to there own. I personally would rather someone bought it then it was chucked in the bin as I do find that very wasteful. But do feel and have said this before that they really need to start to mark down tomorrows date today. Rather than just on the day.

    Yours
