I have Economy 10 in the flat and have 2 meter set up.  One for the 10 hour heat and water and one for the day and night rates..  I assume this affects me?  Not had any communication from EDF
Do you have a radio teleswitch? It's often a separate (usually black) hard plastic box next to your meter. Something like this:

Or it could be integrated into the meter as a radio telemeter, like this:

It will say "radio teleswitch" or "radio telemeter" or something similar on it.

  • I have received an email from energy supplier saying my Economy 7 heating and hot water will not function if I don't change to a smart meter before the cessation of the RTS switch March 2024.
I have a meter 5246C which I have been told by an employee of another energy supplier does not use the Radio Switching service. However when I asked my energy supplier to confirm this they replied "

"RTS meter is the 2nd name for the meter that you have type 5246C single phase watt hour meter solid state digital with an internally switched 100A contactor. Once BBC turns off the signal , it will lose its functionality and also effect the ECO7 rate you are on."

I am concerned they are lying to me just to pressure me into having a smart meter which I am not keen on having as

so many people say they don't work. The cessation of the RTS switching service has been on and off for several years and my energy supplier has never contacted me before about it.

Surely there must be an independent way I can confirm my meter does not use the RTS service.

I've tried the manufacturer but they don't to talk to members of the public.

    Thank you for your time.

    One of these?
I think the employee was correct.

  • Hi Folks

Looking to tap into the collective wisdom of the contributors to this thread.

Currently with So Energy and in the past 6 months or so I have been receiving increasingly frequent and potentially doom laden emails about the need for me to arrange for the installation of a new Smart Meter. They claim that their records show that I have a meter that relies on the RTS system and this is due to switched off at the end of March 2024.

According to them my meter uses the RTS system to control the on and off switching of my central heating and hot water systems. This puzzles me as I have a perfectly adequate Drayton Lifestyle Dual Channel programmer that takes care of these functions quite happily on its own.

I am on a dual tariff for my electricity with an Economy 7 and a standard rate. From memory I think the Economy 7 rate kicks in around midnight and lasts until about 7am. I presume that the switching of the rates is handled internally within the meter as I don't see any hardware or text on the meter that says that it relies on the RTS system.

I have included a pic of my meter below and would appreciate any help in identifying whether it does or does not rely on RTS to function.

    Thanks in advance

On what basis - as Ofgem are yet to announce any delay AFAIK.

And with the latest elexon estimates of 820,000 RTS meters to replace as of this month - down from c1m in June - that means a significant daily target to munch through.

I can't help with the RTS but the certification period of your type of meter currently is 20yrs, so unless it's extended in service in the next couple of years you'll definitely need a new meter by December 2027.  (Edit to clarify: because the certification date on the sticker is December 2007.)
