NS&I website - going round in circles trying to log in

NS&I have now introduced two factor authentication, so this morning when I tried logging on, it said I needed to create a six digit PIN, and logon also requires a One Time Passcode sent via text to my mobile.

Fine...except every time I enter the OTP, it pops up with a message 'securing your browser', asks me whether I want to use my landline or mobile number for a text, I get a text, I enter it, I see an on screen message that says 'Add trusted device' then after a few seconds it just bounces back to the login screen.

I've got all cookies for this website enabled.  Anyone else having these issues?

  • Have you tried using a different browser?

There is a thread I believe in the Techie section where posters have commented about similar issue (not NS&I specifically) using Firefox browser.

works ok for me in Chrome. What browser are you using? Have you tried deleting cookies and browsing history?

EDIT: when I say it works ok for me, I mean that I can log in alright. It's not the smoothest of logins, though - there's quite a bit of authenticating and redisplaying the login screen going on before it eventually displays your home page.

I've just set it up. No problems. It whirred a while and skipped screens when it said securing your browser, but got there after a minute or so.

    Using Microsoft Edge.
  • Thanks for the comments.  I was using Chrome and it didn't like that.  I tried Microsoft Edge and it didn't like that either.

It did work using Safari on my ipad   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've previously had problem with the NS&I site using firefox so always use Chrome on it
  • Oh, and out of interest I also tried it on my phone using Samsung internet browser.  No joy there either.

This sounds as if there is no problem with your NS&I account but there could be one with your browsers. Once you cleared cookies and history in all your browsers, it might well work with all of them.

I tried clearing cookies on one of my least used browsers and that didn't work either.  I tried giving NS&I a call and to my surprise my call was answered within 5 minutes.  The very nice chap on the phone indicated this was quite a common problem since they introduced 2FA - apparently there are more issues with the Samsung internet browser but he thought Chrome and Edge had fewer problems.  He asked my if I'd cleared cookies and when I said I had, he seemed surprised and said I was one of the few folk he'd spoken to who'd tried that!

So it does sound like a known technical issue, oddly seems to be working for some people but not others. It sounds like the NS&I tecchie folk are well aware of the issue so I said I'd just leave it a few days and try again.  I was only logging in to check the value of a matured index linked saving certificate (only wish I'd bought more of those when they were on sale but I didn't anticipate NS&I pulling them when they did, but that's another matter!).

I  logged on yesterday, but so far no request to set up two factor authentication. Has it just started today, or is is maybe being rolled out in stages?
