Scottish Power and SEG

  • Yes - I think it's specific to Scottish Power.  At the time I applied SP were the highest paying per kWh at 12p/kWh if you were just doing SEG with them (i.e you had you supply from another provider, in my case I was still on a fixed rate for my supply with British Gas back in April). If you had your supply from SP already the rate was 15p/kWh.

I guess people like me who have started the process and have been exporting hundreds of kWh over the summer months want their payment before moving to another SEG provider. I can't wait to move to Octopus now (they have been my supplier since last month), but reluctant to do so until SP have paid up for the >500kWh I have exported to date.

Are you absolutely sure you will even get the export payment? I enquired from Octopus about the value of the export we had exported whilst waiting for our system to be registered (we moved to them 1 week after our solar was installed), and they said they weren't able to pay me anything for exports in advance of Octopus completing their bit of the registration.

  • That's correct - Octopus will only pay from the day the tariff for export starts with them.

SP however say that they will pay you from the meter reading that you send them when you conduct the application process - you have to upload a photograph of it. "Due to the various checks we need to undertake, the processing of your application can take 6-8 weeks, but don’t worry - we’ll work from the meter readings you provide as part of your application so you’ll not miss out on any payments."
  • I applied for SEG with Scottish Power months ago. I now have an MPAN but nothing else. I have no idea what the status of the application is as emails are never answered and I am not prepared to wait to get through by phone.
I am thinking now of giving up and changing to Octopus for supply and SEG. Will this mean a new SEG application or do Octopus work with the existing MPAN? What happens to the existing MPAN if a new application is made? I have phoned Octopus but was referred to their web site for information on SEG. That wasn’t helpful!

Octopus will use your existing export MPAN. Contact smart.help@octopus.energy with all your details and they should be able to switch your supply and set up your SEG account. All SEG payments are added to monthly bills.

It's easier with Octopus to phone them. I found through somebody else's suggestion that their response rate is quicker by phone, having waited several days for an email.

  • @harlequin55

This is the email I had from Octopus yesterday

    Hi Helen,

Thanks for getting in touch. You would be able to apply for an export tariff with ourselves and get paid for your export. However, the payments would start from the date the tariff with us starts. With regards to payments following your application with Scottish Power, you would need to query this with them.

Export set up with Octopus can take around 1-3 weeks and you would use the link below to make a decision on the tariff and apply for the best suited.

    https://octopus.energy/smart/outgoing/

If you have any queries in the meantime, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Georgia

  • I am sure it must be completely unrelated to my moan above but the next day I received the email on MINFO registration! Managed to work through that and bank details registered and email received advising all is in order. My next question now is does anyone know when SP payout for the solar generated since the start of the application?
  • Congratulations @harlequin55

I'm interested to know how the meter readings are taken - I am sure it's not from the smart meter because I think someone said they were asked for a reading. We sent a photo in on the day of application showing the meter serial number and the export reading.

This is what the email from SP said (link removed as I am unable to post links):-

Your first payment is due 6 months after the opening meter reading you provided on your application.  When your due date arrives, please visit the following link: **************** to enter your EXPORT reading.

You will need to input your Meter Serial Number and your Reference number (Export MPAN number) as quoted above.  You will be redirected to a screen to input your read value and date of read (*).

(*) Please note, you need to provide all digits from the meter reading, prior to the decimal please i.e. 00100.  The reading will be validated against your previous reads before payment is issued.  Please be aware that we can request photographic evidence of your meter reading at any time, this will always be requested if the reading provided is out with our expected tolerance levels or is inconsistent with previous readings.  This could result in us withholding payment until the evidence is received and validated.
