The Skoda sounds like a sensible choice it it meets your needs. At 8000

Golf estate and love it.If we went petrol, I'd definitely want the hybrid, but that only comes in auto guise with the old 'dry' clutch DSG box that has long-term reliability issues. I'd have one on a 3 year lease, but wouldn't want that DSG (DQ200) variant in a car I planned to own forever. Hence the decision to go with the diesel which uses the more reliable DQ381 'wet' variant, plus I know from previous experience we will get 60mpg out of it in real life. If it weren't for the DQ200 DSG, the hybrid petrol would certainly be in the mix.
Even though we do lower annual mileage, we do live rurally and don't do many very short trips or city (congested) driving, so a diesel for us does get to stretch it's legs when it does get to go out.

I was paid to fill my EV up, today. You can't do that with a diesel.

I deleted the post as I remembered the forum team doesn’t like me to quote any AI recommendations.

That’s one of the few advantages of not having solar panels on your roof.

I have got solar panels. I turned them off for most of the day.

Really, why was that? Do you not get FiT or export payments?

If you are considering the Octavia Estate and opting for diesel because of the auto gear box choices, then you might be worth looking at the Corolla hybrid estate. We had the predecessor (Auris) and it was a very fine car with loads of kit for the money although wholly devoid of any character. I'd be hesitant of a diesel and only 8k miles per year, though I note your comment about not many short trips.

Because it is the correct market response, by not adding to the surplus, and you get nothing for any solar consumed - no SEG payment and no payment on an import. It's just one of the Agile dilemmas for which there is no very satisfactory solution. Batteries give you more options but mine aren't connected yet.
As it happens there wasn't much sun today, so it wasn't much of a wrench to turn the solar off. On a perfect solar day I'd probably have foregone the paid-to-use leccy. As I wanted to test my new air-conditioner it was the perfect opportunity to wind the ASHP right up, to simulate a heat wave, and have the A/C on to check that it would cope in a real situation. I also got paid for the the fun. It was good to find out that my woodburning stove, through which I'm venting the A/C, got up to 50 degrees, so I've now insulated that so the heat doesn't radiate back into the room, which will improve future efficiency.

That’s interesting using the wood burner as a vent. I have an open fireplace and never thought of that as an option. At the risk of going further off topic (but I really want to know) what air conditioner are you using and does it have a heating function as well?
