I know on our Leaf V2X there is a constant overhead from the car when the charging circuit is enabled so it uses somewhere between (I think) 1 and 2 kwh in the car itself every 24 hours regardless of whether the daily throughput is 0kw or 50kwh, any conversion losses are on top. The AC→DC and back conversion is done in the charger not the car in our case so measuring overall efficiency is even harder.

Just looked up the data for the Sigenergy DC bidi - efficiency is an impressive 88-92% Ac-DC-AC round trip but….car 'charger circuit on' drain is said to be between 200w and 500w - so 5-12kwh per 24 hours! Sigenergy try to reduce this as their system includes a home battery too so they use that to handle small loads and only trigger the car battery to manage larger loads and/or to recharge the home battery, leaving the car in normal low power sleep mode most of the time.

    I think....

A neighbour's parents turned up today in their new Omada 9. I had a quick look around it & it's a lot of car for £45K… 80 mile electric range, 0-60 4.8s, 450bhp & all the creature comforts you'd get on a European car costing £100K. Perfect for Ken…??

That’s interesting about the background consumption. I’ll have to ask my son if his Wallbox Quasar suffers from this.

I know you use yours a lot so it’s perhaps insignificant in the grand scheme of things but my son basically uses his Wallbox as a charger.

Presumably if it is only on whilst charging the losses are the same as a standard charger?

    I think....

That’s true. I forgot you leave one of your EVs almost permanently connected.

Are EVs losing market share globally?

I have just been watching the Electric Viking’s video on the IEA’s projections for global EV sales reaching 30% of the market this year. Of course, we all know that the IEA are always way behind the curve so I thought I would check out what is actually happening. I found this report from Focus2Move quite interesting. I don’t want to quote too much if the report for copyright reasons but I have provided a link below so you can get the detail.

Globally, vehicles sales (cars + light vehicles) up to April 2026 have reached 26,96million units, decreasing by 3.8% in year-on-year change.

EV sales struggle globally in 2026, losing about 5.3% in year-on-year volume. While several countries are developing a charging ecosystem, policy uncertainty and overreliance on key actors such as China to provide materials hindered the segment’s growth.

Focus2move| The Top 50 Car Market Ranking in 2026

Sorry, I have to pop out now but will continue later.

Edit: I’m back. Just what is meant by EV sales today isn’t always clear. Increasingly it seems to include PHEVs. If though we take the IEA’s figure of EVs constituting 25% of global car sales in 2025 then based on the Focus2move figures the EV share would have fallen by 0.4 basis points to 24.6% or down by approximately 1%. It’s only a few months so it doesn’t constitute a trend but perhaps a regrouping as China adjusts to a reduced domestic market while other EV markets around the world continue to grow.

    2nd edit:

It would seem from figures in another Focus2move report that EVs as referred to in the report quoted above does include PHEVs:

EV sales worldwide struggles in 2026 as segment’s giants are impacted by saturation in China’s domestic market.  In particular, YTD sales up to april dropped by 5.3%.

BYD remained the leader holding a 16.3% share, despite slowing down and dropping by 30.3%.

Tesla managed to bounce back, ranking in 2nd with a 11.4% share (+4.5%).

Tesla regained its crown as the best selling BEV brand so the above figures must include PHEVs. Despite numerous claims over the past few years that Toyota was failing to respond to a changing automotive landscape it continues to remain the top selling manufacturer.

I've got V2L on my cheaper MG4 and have found even that useful as I have PV but no domestic battery. Using Agile when cheap and the granny charger when solar is good (and I am home to monitor) and then peak lopping the expensive 16.00-19.00 period if necessary means reasonable bills for me. At the costs I'm paying round trip efficiencies aren't so critical.
