Shell are now charging 85p per kWh for rapid charging
Still think that EV's are superior to ICE's?
New Octopus Go tariff, 12p per kWh.

At least 99% of my charging would be on that with only a couple of uses of public charging a year, if that.
So yes, it would be superior for me. Really liking the look of the new MG4, which, starting at £26,000 is very competitively priced.

    Yes.

My car has only ever been rapid charged once (not at home to tell you the mileage but it's 34-ish k.

Average cost per kWh for me is around 14.5p, not 85p. It would still on a motorway be about the same price as a petrol Focus/Astra (of a similar size) but significantly cleaner.
I was pondering exactly the same as you, that at 85p the cost per mile is about the same as a petrol car. But I suppose, desperate times require desperate measures, and with the extremely high, but transitory leccy prices at the moment, I can't blame cherry pickers trying for a last defence of ICEV's before they fade v's the now far superior BEV choice. Just need prices to fall, and supply to rise.

But until another transport revolution is complete, let's sing the praises of horses v's the Model T Ford ..... again!  ;)
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 28kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.

I'm hopefully picking mine up on 26-Oct. SE SR in Camden Grey :)

I don't have an EV tariff - I'm on the standard cap rate (33.76p) - but even that is way lower p per mile than an ICEV.

You need to think of rapid chargers like service station petrol. It provides a convenient service at a premium, and most people add enough fuel to get them to a cheaper source.

Even at 85p/kwh, you're looking at about 21-28p/mile which isn't far off many combustion cars, especially at service station prices.

I was planning to stop at an Osprey charging station tomorrow, and saw that they charge £1/kWh. TBH, I was quite pleased as it looks like it's a really quiet spot as a result and I shouldn't have any problems getting topped up in about 20 mins.

It will be the 2nd time ever that I've used a paid public charger, and I'm not interested in queueing for a cheaper charger to save £10.

    Yes, far superior.
So where is the cost saving now.?
Don't use the Shell rapid chargers. 🙄
You can be sure that the others will follow...

£10 is a lot of money to spend unnecessarily

  • £10 doesn’t get you much petrol though.

Rather than quoting extremes (MWay services, rapid chargers, Octopus) it's probably better to compare standard variable electricity vs supermarket petrol.  Maybe 10p BEV vs 18p ICE per mile? BEV still wins but not by as much as before.
