For me, reducing the bills has been an exercise in identifying the things that a) I need rather than want, b) are important for me psychologically and c) fit with my wish to do my miniscule bit for the planet, probably in that order. I would be doing this even if I had more money to spare. Like I said before, I know I'm lucky in that I don't have to negotiate my choices with others, have no dependents and don't have health issues that necessitate spending more on bills - it hasn't always been like this.
I use my laptop for entertainment (I renew my TV licence sporadically and, as of today, have just let it go again so I'm back to what I'm allowed to watch for free). Like others, I use audiobooks (lots from the library), radio and reading (massive home library, free books online, plus public library), all of which I would be doing even if I were a millionaire. Libraries are great. We need to keep using them to make sure that the services aren't cut more.

Cant beat a good old Lister thumping away in the background, adds to ambience. I bet the used chip oil doesn't add much to the local aroma either.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

Lol it would drive me nuts if someone did that round here, just a couple of houses away they have a mini digger and the low hum on tick over must be very similar to a Lister.....grrrrrrr
Although who doesn't love the smell of chips lol mind you could be smelly fish oil😜🤣🤣0 -
I'm all electric and use 6-7 Kwh a day currently0
-
Currently use around 6.8kw/h of electricity a day with SO's desktop and 2 monitors. Without them on, it's around 4.3kw/h a day for all other usage including my working from home on 2 laptops. We used to use around 8.5kw/h a day, but since April price increase the old and rarely used fridge and freezer have both been disconnected, saving 2kw/h a day.
Gas is around 5.5kw/h a day for water heating and cooking. When the heating is on it's around 100kw/h a day.0 -
Broomstick said:I'm now averaging at about 1.5 kWh daily for electric, and this past week has been 0.12 kWh daily for gas but I'm still experimenting with that. No solar power unfortunately - but it's been really interesting to see Benny's and other solar users' figures. I'm a one person household. Basically, I think I've now reached an almost-camping lifestyle but indoors.
Electric: No use of fridge, freezer, dishwasher, tv, dryer, PC, oven, but careful use of lights, kettle, washing machine and microwave, plus laptop, internet, phone and other small electricals that need charging. I'm vegan and through the summer am only buying food that does not need chilling or much cooking. I'm also lucky in that I have a couple of useful food shops within walking distance and I have some tinned food in the cupboard for emergencies. I think I'm going to struggle to keep the electricity costs this low when the heat of the summer arrives and I would normally have switched on a fan.
Gas: space heating switched off, water heated every couple of days for 20-30 mins only (for quick showers), low use of hob. The fact that I can hand wash dishes perfectly well most of the time in cold water has been a discovery.0 -
