What I'm realising reading some of these replies ,is that there are a fair number of people who are happy (?) to return to the Middle Ages - won't be long before someone posts that they are going to hibernate in November until the Spring!!
Also that the comparisons are like apples with onions - single person households with solar panels vs older pensioner households in large draughty houses.3 -
I'm expecting the charges to be more than usage this current quarter. The positive is that the financial help from the government is a really big help!Benny2020 said:Us low users still have the problem of standing charges of course.0 -
We have two fridge freezers, one of which is in the garage. We need two as we get absolutely loads of meat during shooting season from friends, and I freeze surplus eggs. Also currently breeding hens for meat.
Other use is the router, charging my phone and tablets, the annoyingly expensive electric shower and the washing machine. Minimal slow cooker use. Electric blankets on kids beds.
I also handwash in cold water nowadays @Broomstick
In winter lots of candles around for lighting and I absolutely love my head torch.
Our ways are regarded as kooky but we get great satisfaction from living how we do, and you certainly enjoy that cuppa when you’ve waited for the stove kettle to heat the water xx

At various points in my life, I've lived that sort of lifestyle and so being frugal to the extent I am at the moment is not alien. I'm also really lucky in that my children are adult and independent and I don't have illnesses or disabilities that need higher fuel use. The switch from veggie to vegan happened a couple of years ago and stopping using a fridge was something I unexpectedly switched to when I realised I didn't need one after my (omnivore) son moved out last year. I'd already made the decision before trying deliberately to cut my bills further.victor2 said:Have friends who live in a very rural area totally off grid, with solar panels/batteries to run fridge and lighting. Rainwater captured for washing, stored in black painted containers to absorb summer heat. Calor gas stove for cooking. Composting toilet, which takes some getting used to!

Didn't know you could freeze eggs?
Raw or boiled?0 -
I am conflicted on this as its not something that traditionally a Conservative government should do.Broomstick said:

Maggie would never have bucked the market like this.
This Conservative government have shifted well to the left.0 -
Electricity averaged over the year, 3.15kWh. At this time of year probably ~2.8kWh.0

Whisk them up as you would to make scrambled egg then just freeze in Tupperware tubs with a note on saying how many eggs are in there😊Benny2020 said:Didn't know you could freeze eggs?

Frozen egg whites have been used for decades so makes sense.
As for the people quoting energy usage and not including their solar usage it's misleading as the total says average daily use not just grid use👍
Currently 7.5kWh a day here all electric household so that includes hot water as well. We could easily dip to under 6kWh a day is we didn't use the tumble dryer but to be honest we have met our target and then some for the energy savings we wanted to get to since the start of April.0 -
Its a fair point about solar, May is usually the best month of the year but barely beat April this year.
My usage from the grid is averaging 1.6 kwh a day but my panels give me another 18 kwh a day to play with.0
