Grocery Price Increases - What's the Biggest Hike You've Seen?

YorksLass said:Products that are most likely to be affected are meat, cereal products, dairy, fruit and veg and other products that rely on wheat for feed (eg white meats). If this is the case, it would make sense (as Slinky says) to have a decent lower priced stockpile at home (if you can afford it and have the storage space).Slinky said:Noticed that the Greek yogurt I buy in Tesco has gone up another 6p. A few months back it was 45p, now it's 65p.

Stork margarine used to be £1 then it went up to £1.25 and when I went to add some to my online order today it was £1.50! It's gone up by 50% in a matter of weeks which feels like profiteering to me. They didn't have any lower priced alternatives so I just left it and will pop in to one of the supermarkets when I'm nearby and hope they've got some own brand baking block in.3

My niece has a Costco membership mostly for buying petrol. She took me with her last week and I got a large pack of Flora Buttery for £1.99 and enough loo roll to see me through to the end of the year I'm lucky that I have the space to store it. I'm also lucky that I have a niece who looks out for me. I suppose that would be a good way to beat price hikes if a group of people shared the cost of membership and shared the large packs of things between them. Just a thought. Off to look at the new prepping thread. X5

I buy cheap fish cakes because I don't like the better quality "fishy" ones. The price has gone from £1 a few months ago to £2.50 in 50p increments.
I know fish has gone up a lot but there's hardly any in these cheap ones.3 -
4 pts of semi skimmed milk: Co-op price £1.70; Sainsburys £1.35.
Sachet of a branded stir fry sauce: Co-op price £1.30; Sainsburys 70p, currently on promotion at 50p (same brand, same size)
Guess where I'll be shopping?Be kind to others and to yourself too.2 -
Well my mission to find Golden Cow easi spread from Iceland hit another stumble...asked MIL to look in her Iceland some 18 miles away from me and they to say they have never stocked it.............it must be too good to be true at £2.75 for 500grams.
So 3 nearest me have never heard of it either.
So far seems Tesco still have Countrylife and £3.153 -
I know what you mean @YorksLass. My 2 local supermarkets are Co op and Waitrose. I hardly buy anything at Co op anymore their prices have gone through the roof on everything. Waitrose have increased prices on lots of things but not massive increases like Co op. In fact it is the cheapest place for Lurpak spreadable at £3.75 and they gave me a £1 off voucher so very good price for me today.3

i think virtually everything will be increasing in cost for the forseeable during this year at least. The prices are rising almost daily in the food shops, and how many young mums with families cope I have no idea..
I suppose in a way I am fortunate in that having lived a fairly frugal lifestyle for a looong time its almost second nature to me to keep an eye on prices.
My DDs MiL and her OH came over to the IoW today to visit us (they live in Wincanton ) and we were talking about the CoL increases, and we both agree how things are getting really frightening.
She was saying how she got her OH to start a veg patch in their garden, and although he wasn't keen at first, he sees now the benefit of her forward planning.
They are both reasonably well off at the moment as they are retired and downsized just at the right time. I pointed her in the direction of MSE ,hopefully it will give her a few more ideas.
its going to be a challenge to us all, but I'm sure we will cope as well as we can.
I must admit when I return to Kent in 10 days time the thought of food shopping is a bit dauntingBut I do have a bit squirelled away which will help out.

Last week the Tesco chocolate I've been buying for years at £1 had gone up to £1.05. Don't know exactly when as we'd been away for a couple of weeks. Today it was £1.10. Their own brand stock pots which I prefer to the Knorr ones have also gone from £1 to £1.05. (Knorr have gone from 99p to £1.19)In the summer I usually buy different packets of Tesco cooked meats to go with our salads. Can't believe these are now £3.25 each and I'd split one between 2 of us. I've picked up their cheapest own brand version of these at £1.99 to give them a try. I've also spotted that they do sliced chorizo and sliced salami in individual packs which work out cheaper than their mixed selection of cold meats. I'm going to check out the local deli to see how they compare. I've also just read an article on parma ham being produced by keeping pigs in crates still, so am not buying that again.OH has a horrid cough, they'd run out of own brand cough medicine at £2.25, darned well not paying £8 for Covonia. They'd also run out of cheap coleslaw at 74p, wasn't going to pay double that so will stretch what I've got in the fridge for a few more days.
