well having made a total of 2 loaves now, I consider myself an expert (not) but read all of this thread (including another post from me with a link to a FREE ebook with over 100 bread recipes). Buy Strong bread flour (will probably say "ideal for breadmakers" on the packet) and be exact about any measurements in the recipe you do decide to use.

My raisin bread was ready at 6am this morning, and too good to be true. It is all gone!

Bought this and I cooked the first loaf. Edible but not great. So I let OH deal with it and she has taken it over.

Now she's back at work for a few days a week so I can start to experiment. The fruity loaf sounds like a must-do.

Just wondered if everyone having probs is making sure to move the paddle over to the left position before commencing cycle.

Also, so far have found that ASDA strong white is little different to Addingtons.

Excellent thread, This should have it's own website.

LOADS of hints & tips and I'm a bloke and need all the help I can get - IE nothing comes naturally.

Ooh, but I can multi-task though.:)

BTW Vivmag - any kind of virgin is OK by me.

I have only used Sainsbury's own both brown and white strong bread flour so far and been really pleased with the results. Have followed the recipes in the book that came with breadmaker, but just reduced the salt and sugar a little.

I have found the Lidl flour excellent [on offer at 48 at present], and unfortunately Hovis is good to [it is not cheap, but sometimes on offer in Morrison's near me]

The Waitrose Canadian is great, but quite expensive

Avoid Wrights Parmesan & sun dried tomato bread mix, it is so delicious warm with butter that you will have none left within the hour :rotfl:

I would try them all, start cheap & if OK stay there, if not move up the price scale

    Made a wholemeal loaf today!
Did a 50/50 one as I wasn't sure if a 100% wholemeal would turn out too heavy.
Made a large loaf this time as previously I did XL and I think L is a better size tbh.
Anyway, looks good - should have cooled by now so off for a slice... :D
I've been using Hovis Flour but will give Lidl's a try.
 Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.
  • I find that the 'M' size is the smallest setting available on me Panasonic breadmaker. The recipe in the manual supplied with the machine also has ingredient measurement for M, L, and XL. To me 'M' is too much for me and my 2 kids to consume for the day or even 2 days. Has anyone bought and breadmaker recipe books that has recipe for smaller loafs.?

any new offers on these bread machines - I want one but missed the amazon £40 quid off offer :(
  • Paddle getting stuck in the bread isnt unusual is it? It's easy enough to remove and quite useful as you have to take it out for cleaning anyway.

Bargain888 - I have a couple books but dont think there are any "small" ones in there. Can only think of one option - have the breadmaker knead the dough for a smaller loaf than Medium and then put it in a bread tin in the oven ? Or when the Medium loaf goes stale, just cut the stale bread up and use as croutons or fried bread... or bird feed!

We are using tesco OL strong flower now and that is working just as good as the ASDA OL.

Have also made granary (hovis ££) and wholemeal (hovis££) and both have been good. I'll be looking for OL equivalents when I do the shopping

As for the paddle getting stuck in the bread, just turn it upside down (mind the heat) and wiggle from underneath a couple of times to loosen it.

We are trying the "sandwich bread" receipe now, just to see the difference.

The only loaf we have not liked so far was the French bread reciepe. Very crusty, and an unusual texture, and maybe lacked for sugar.

No problem using oil instead of butter in all the reciepes tried so far.
