  • Hi,

I bought a Panasonic beadmaker at Christmas and up to now I have only used the ready mixes from Tesco (own brand) and Hovis.

THe only success was Hovis white which was perfect. Tesco and Hovis wholemeal and granary all seemed failures whith the loaves only reaching halfway up the pan and the bread heavy. I tried increasing the water and this improved matters but nowhere near the excellent results of the Hovis white.

I have used fastbake and normal wnd selected 'large' The best of the bunch occurred when I inadvertantly selected extra large.

Is my machine faulty?, the recipes say select large, is this ok, I have been adding butter or margerine.

Another endorsement for the £2.99 gadget that Clutterfree found. I bought one after reading the above post, and it is really good! Equal and even slices every time.

I use Tesco Strong white bread flour 1.5kg for 48p and Tesco Strong Stoneground 100% Wholemeal Bread Flour (1.5Kg) 93p. (see below)

I have tried Waitrose and Hovis Brand before but switched to Tesco brand and see no difference in the quality of the bread.

Always put in the yeast in first, then the flour, sugar, salt, butter or oil and finally the water.

We've tried both the Sainsburys and Tesco ownbrand bread flour and found the Sainsburys one far superior in quality to the Tesco although of course flour quality for any brand can vary quite a bit apparently - we found the Tesco flour gave a rather "heavy" feel to the bread.

The Sainsburys flour used to be 48p like Tesco but they racked it up to 89p awhile back although it has dropped back down to 79p probably because Hovis is only 85p.

I've just had a look at the Sainsburys site and this is their current prices/options.
