  • Hovis bread mix 2 for £1 at ASDA (granary, white and w wheat - large loaves)
McDougall flour 2 for £1.50 at Tesco (comes with birds eye custard 20p coupons attached)

The Hovis mix just needs water, butter/oil (optional) Good for those who are having trouble with measurements etc. Hope this helps someone.

Hi all i used the hovis brown bread ready made mix and i was really disappointed as the bread was really hard and not even that tasty.

    any ideas why this happened.

Also the paddle did not move around at all? :(

i was so excited about making the bread too.

Does the mix already have yeast included?
You didn't open it up during baking?
The paddle must of moved or you wouldn't have bread - if you used the full programme it will rest and do nothing for quite a while before starting.

Surely these ready mixes are more expensive than buying strong flour (~50p for 1-1.5Kg) and fast yeast?

On my experiment with the sandwich programme - the bread is very similar to the basic programme, but the difference is it made nearly square bread! Should have guessed.

just made my first loaf - using a hovis granary mix - chucked it into my new machine, added water and put on the fastbake setting - less than 2 hours later the most delicious bread ever - I had another bread machine before which made 'bricks' the panny is fab, thanks to everyone on here for recommending it, and so pleased i got it at a great price in Tesco today!

Which Tesco Extra did you get it at. Been to my nearest one today and said they didn't stock them, you had to order via Tesco Direct. Checked with them and none available.

Recently bought a Panasonic second hand off ebay and it broke last night. Wish I'd got in on the Amazon bargain. Boooohooo.

Thanks Lorian. i did open it a few times to check what was happening inside.

i have just put in another packet and set the settings more accurately i didnt understand it too well the first time and i know its pretty self explanitory!! I also wont open it until its ready if i can stop myself!. The paddle was turning this time but it has gone queit now. I used the ready to bake mix as i was not sure of the quantities.Just checked and it does contain yeast.

better luck this time i hope!
  • Can't believe how many people are using mixes in their machines! I can get a white loaf on the go in less than 5 mins ;)

Do you just put 400g of the mixture in? And then add the water/butter?

Going to get some poppy seeds to try out next I think.
  • Hello

I don't have a panasonic, i wasn't quick enough, so bought a Kenwood instead, first loaf just cooking. I'm not sure I got the right yeast, I bought the only stuff my local Tesco had which is 8 sachets of fast action dried yeast, is this the right kind of yeast

    Thank you!
  • Yup Becca, that's the stuff! Good luck with your 1st loaf :D

    Yes.
You can get poppy seeds 1/2 price at Juilan Greaves now. Also, they sell a seed mix (pumpkin, sesame etc) and dried fruit mix which is a great addition to bread and should last a long time as you only need to add 2-3 tbsp.

With the Aldi (The Pantry) mix you measure out 500g (as the packs are 1kg for 79p) add 160ml of water 160ml of Milk and 10 grams of marg (I use butter as I feel its a slightly better result) set the machine on Large, Basic and Dark crust, the bread is fantastic and I have noticed that the crusts are getting nicer and darker the more I use the machine.

The Hovis Mix does not require Milk but is definately not as nice as the Aldi Mix when baked, and Ive tried some Mix's from Morrisons which just require water (no Marg or Butter) but they are not the best in my opinion.

Personally I dont feel any other Mix's including the Hovis one comes anywhere close to the Aldi Pantry Mixs.
