  • I have mastered the pizza dough now - really have no idea what happened the first time ( I think it may just have been me not measuing properly?!). I made a wholemeal loaf in the week and it was divine. My next try will be the spicy fruit loaf, but I have just started a diet so am worried the effect all this bread is having!

I bought one of these breadmakers before christmas and was told by a friend that Aldi's The Pantry Bread Mix was the best, but stupidly ignoring their advice I tried Tesco, Hovis, Wrights and a packet version from Morrisons first which were all rubbish apart from the Hovis which was quite good and made an average tasting loaf (nothing special), I eventually made a trip to Aldi last week and asked the Manager where the Pantry bread mix's were, he told me it was a special and that they didnt do them all year so I bought 6 white mix's which were fantastic in fact its the best bread Ive ever tasted and all my family agree, the bread does seems to be getting better every time I bake it, and like the other poster said the crusts are getting slighty darker and crisper with every attempt which I love, I also noticed that even when my mix is 20 or so gramms out the result is still perfect every time, maybe Ill try adding butter to teh mix tonight rather than margarine!

Its that good I went back today and bought another 40 packets of White Mix, havent tried the wholemeal, granary, sunflower or italian ciabatta type versions yet!

Hopefully the manager was mistaken and its not a special as this is the only bread mix Ill be using!

    New poster huh?

You don't work for Aldi's by any chance, do you Warren? :)

I would just like to say I haven't bought a loaf in 3 weeks since I got this machine. Excellent! :j

Has anybody worked out the cost of a loaf using say aldi flour or the dove thats on offer ? I would be interested to know as we eat enormous quantities of bread at between £1-1.30 per loaf, rarely on offer as its wholemeal for health reasons. If I could make it significantly cheaper I would get off my lazy behind and do it regularly instead of rarely!

We've calculated that a wholemeal loaf using the Dove's Organic Wholemeal from Sainsburys (60p for 1.5kg bag) is around 50p a large loaf.

This includes the flour, yeast, butter, sugar and electric.

    four quick points/questions:

Anyone tried the clever stuff like croissants yet?

The instructions for rolls seem to suggest you leave it 12 hours at one stage, is that right?

Morrisons own label strong flour is every bit as good as hovis.

What would happen if you put too much yeast in the mix?

For me (I have the Panasonic 255), the Tesco wholemeal is delicious. The Hovis turns out damp. Haven't tried the Aldi one yet, will go in the week to get some!

Never done it, but at a guess it would rise & rise and spill over the top of the pan, possibly stick to lid as well

I made the croissants the other day... quite awkward and time consuming. Also I didn't realise quite how unhealthy they were until I saw how much butter I had to put in!
Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.

I did indeed buy Tesco flour, I think I will have to try some Sainsburys and Aldi flour and see if it comes out any better :T

    Thanks very much

I'm now convinced that my problems were Tesco flour related, have done Hovis and Morrisons since and both come out just as I had expected. thanks to all, I might have consigned the breadmaker to the pile of electrical goods which seemed like a good idea at the time :)
