I bought one of these breadmakers before christmas and was told by a friend that Aldi's The Pantry Bread Mix was the best, but stupidly ignoring their advice I tried Tesco, Hovis, Wrights and a packet version from Morrisons first which were all rubbish apart from the Hovis which was quite good and made an average tasting loaf (nothing special), I eventually made a trip to Aldi last week and asked the Manager where the Pantry bread mix's were, he told me it was a special and that they didnt do them all year so I bought 6 white mix's which were fantastic in fact its the best bread Ive ever tasted and all my family agree, the bread does seems to be getting better every time I bake it, and like the other poster said the crusts are getting slighty darker and crisper with every attempt which I love, I also noticed that even when my mix is 20 or so gramms out the result is still perfect every time, maybe Ill try adding butter to teh mix tonight rather than margarine!
Its that good I went back today and bought another 40 packets of White Mix, havent tried the wholemeal, granary, sunflower or italian ciabatta type versions yet!
Hopefully the manager was mistaken and its not a special as this is the only bread mix Ill be using!0 -
Which recipe would you use to add the seed mix too-i can only see the one that has soya flour in it.0

For me (I have the Panasonic 255), the Tesco wholemeal is delicious. The Hovis turns out damp. Haven't tried the Aldi one yet, will go in the week to get some!0

My first attempts were with Waitrose Organic Bread Flour and turned out perfect, even using the timer and another one using rapid bake.
I then changed to Tesco own label strong white flour and the results were very disappointing, very heavy bread.
I've now got an Aldi mix to try and I'll also be mixing the Tesco flour in with another brand to get rid of it.
Seems like a few people are struggling with Tesco flour. So glad I read the thread again as I was starting to get despondent after a perfect start.
if the breads 'heavy' you need to up the water/liquid content .. as you do know not all flours are the same and you do need to tweak the recipe to make it work for you. so experiment especially with the lower priced flour since thats where the benefits are in the long run.0 -

hovis works fine with around 280 - 300 ml of water per 500g , 2 tbsp milk and 2tblsp oil .. even with rapid bake .. check the consistency when the machine is kneading the dough at early stages if you want to tweak the recipe a bit.0 -

Thanks! Will try that next week when I need a loaf baked.
Although the packet does say 350ml. I reduced it to 330ml last time but it was still a bit damp. So I will drop to 300ml next0 -
I am using Dove's Organic Flour in my 254.
So far I have used white, wholemeal and mixed grain malthouse flours with Hovis dried yeast. All the loaves have been excellent and can certainly recommend these flours. I've been following the recipes that came with the machine. I've been getting the flour in Sainsbury as the selection is better than Tesco.
The white is £1.08 for 1.5kg
The wholemeal is 60p for 1.5kg (yes 60p is correct)0 -
Hollydays
I tend to do a white fastbake and add a selection of seeds to that or I do a 50% white 50% granary with seeds. I put it to the next level up so if I'm doing a large loaf I select x large I also add a touch more yeast to cope with the seeds. Not very precise I'm afraid but it works for me.0 -
Missed my raisin beep today so ended up with a spicy fruit loaf without the fruit!
It was flat too because I kept opening the lid to see why it hadnt beeped at me!
Must be going deaf like my mother!
Tasted ok and it was my first disaster. I have just bought the Costco 16kg bag of white bread flour so can practise lots listening for the beep beep noise.

Just made the spicy fruit loaf after suggestions from others here. Smell in the house was divine and it tasted delicious. So light as well. I am going to try the seeded wholemeal tomorrow. Love the French bread, but have decided I must try out some of the other recipes. Also had yummy pizza on Thursday. Even DD ate hers. A real test as she can be fussy!! Still can't believe how easy it is to use to get such great results. I always lift the lid expecting disaster, but all recipes have been perfect so far.0
