How are you all getting on with making even slices???
Mine are either way too thick or too thin! lol
 Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.
  • Mmmm, mine came yesterday afternoon and I've baked a perfectly formed and delicious loaf of basic white bread, which we had with lovely hot tomato soup!

Many thanks to the OP as I would never have actually bought one, had it not been for the price, which I thought was reasonable.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised at the size of the breadmaker, it is not as large as I thought it would be, although it is still quite big, so I think it will live in the utility room where space isn't soo valuable.

    Thank you!

Freshly baked crusty loaves are difficult to slice evenly, I use an electric knife or slicer with good results. I've been told that leaving the bread in the fridge overnight helps, but I haven't tried it.

We started to do a loaf where by we needed to add some seeds etc. The machine bleeped to tell us to add them which we did, but then the timer went off.
Where did we go wrong,? It is not very clear in the instructions for the 254 model

Took delivery of one of these just before Christmas and it works very well.
However, there is a problem, the paddle is such a loose fit on the spindle that there is 5cms free movement at the end of the paddle and this will probably cause serious premature wear.
I'm wondering whether mine is a one off or maybe the Amazon £39.99 items were seconds?

Mine is about 3cms clean, I think I read in manual it is loose and I thought it was so it could be removed when full of dough.

Page 35 Problems: The kneading blade rattles - This is because the blade fits loosely on the shaft. (this is not a fault)

Not a big problem as the paddle is made of alloy and the shaft steel, so buying a (or getting a replacement) new paddle should not cost to much and would fix any wear. The paddel would wear before the shaft thats a harder material.

I added seeds when the timer bleeped and wasn't sure what to do next so closed the lid and left it. A few minutes later, the machine and timer started up again. This loaf was absolutely delicious but the next seeded loaf I made was not so good because I decided to put all the ingredients in at the beginning and time it on fast bake. (It was edible but smaller.)
As another poster said, best to follow instructions exactly. :)

I was having problems too, so I bought a Fusion bread knife from Tesco for £10, as recommended by redmel1621 on the Old style board.
I've found it to be really good.

    Poor engineering though.
I think they may have commonised a paddle designed for a previous model (253?) and although it can be replaced easily they are not cheap (£12 - £20) relative to what we've paid for the breadmaker.

Don't clean it too thoroughly - I leave the little bit of dough/bread in the gap after each loaf and that stops the paddle moving about relative to the spindle. We make a loaf every day and have been using mine for at least 6 years now without a problem.
P.S. No germs to worry about because every time you make a loaf it bakes the pan...

Just leave the loaf to cool overnight on a wire rack. If you like a crusty loaf, leave it an extra day and it's even easier to slice. I bake a loaf every day and am usually slicing yesterday's or the day before's loaf. Older bread also makes much nicer toast.
